Love it. Pure gold with the upcoming Chandra Ablaze.

But nobody ever hard-casts this! Not in the early game, at least. Anyway, Lightning Bolt doesn't have utility when you discard it. I know you can play it in response to a discard spell, but sometimes you want to use discarding as a cost.

Obviously not the only madness card you want in your deck if you are running the combo burning inquiry + megrim + underworld dreams, but this one works really well with it for the low madness cost to use it early on or late game.

If you discard it, great! it not, you can hold it and wait for another discard, or use it straight up.

I would have enjoyed a 2R CC, double red makes me sad in multi-color madness deck :(

I used it with sonic seizure (Obviosly making sure they were the only cards in my hand, don't get on me about random) for a nice 6 damage for 2 red.

Strictly worse than a lot of things, hard casted.
But Madness'd and it's strictly better than even the almighty bolt.

Many people overlook the obvious difference between this card and Lightning Bolt.

For example, if you play Avatar of Discord or other spells that require discarding, with a hand size of five, you can activate Madness and play Fiery Temper, ended up with two cards and six damage done (Avarar's 2 discard -> 2 Fiery Temper = 3 cards used total).

If you have Lightning Bolt instead and wants to do the same six damage, you ended up with zero cards in hand (Avatar itself + 2 discard + 2 lightning bolts = 5 cards used total).

Lightning Bolt, without a doubt, is stronger because it has no restriction, that does not make these two good comparison with each other. In the example above, Fiery Temper certain wins on card advantage.

Yeah, I agree. You can't say strictly here as you could read this card as:

Fiery Temper Red
Instant
Deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
The next time you would discard a card this turn, prevent it.

But outside madness decks, a bolt would be better as it would be more easily used.

In any decent Madness / Hellbent deck, this is Lightning Bolt.

Use this with Stormbind to deal 5 damage for 2Red. Pretty decent.

You can't actually choose Lightning Bolt over this in a proper Madness deck. This lets you trigger 'discard a card' based abilities like crazy. Can do 6 damage with this and Trespasser il-vec.

This card is obviously better then lightning bolt with the right cards around it. Lightning Bolt is obviously better in most other decks with Red.

I'm going to point out exactly why this isn't better or worse than lightning bolt.
If you were to be forced to discard lightning bolt by an opponent or by having an oversized hand, you can cast it for its madness cost. Granted, I like everybody else here would have rather had its normal cost be {1}{R}, but seriously who doesn't wish cards costed less?

If you're using this, you're playing it for its madness cost, where it's actually better than Lightning Bolt.

If you're not playing it for its madness cost, well, good luck.

Now, mind you, this is super good. But.. I hope the next time they do Madness that they utilize some more of that "instant speed if madness, not instant speed when normal" design space. I think this guy would've been *cooler* as a 2 mana color-light sorcery. It would also compete (kind of) with Incinerate then.

That said, again, very good card. Gathan Raiders and Putrid Imp say hi.

I've heard people playing Faithless Looting in Modern RDW and never heard of anyone thinking of playing this.

Not that it is the best card (it is situational), but cards like Rift Bolt and Lava Spike were $4/ea because they were the closest thing to Lightning Bolt.

Well, I don't care, I'm playing it in my deck along side my Browbeat's. You think I'm more dangerous with those three cards? Hahaha...
