Perfect card for the set. kamigawa block constructed was all about control decks...

A very good card. It is only slightly hurt by the CIPT.

If you used Boseiju, Who Shelters All and say any other card that would counter using Boseiju, Who Shelters All as a mana source... Wouldn't that counter the "cannot be countered" of banefire since it would resolve earlier on the stack?--

Temporal Extortion.

*Edit*: I could have sworn it cost 1BlackBlackBlack. My bad. Well, you could still use something like Thorn of Amethyst I guess...

@ ely_bob: It says "can't be countered by spells or abilities" for exactly a case like that one you exemplified.
So you have a counterspell that can't be countered (by spells or abilities) which targets a Banefire which cannot be countered (by spells or abilities).
Once the counterspell tries to counter Banefire, it will "fizzle" since Banefire is immune to getting countered. The "fizzle" which causes that counterspell to get countered is caused by a game-based effect, therefore neither a spell nor an ability.
So in the end, the counterspell will get removed from the stack, and Banefire will resolve.

Regarding the card itself: I would even reconsider putting it into a sideboard of an instant/sorcery heavy deck (like a burn deck or another control deck, for instance) since it enters tapped, which slows you down a lot (especially in eternal formats). Additionally, 2 life for a single use are quite costy, and there is no alternate mana ability in case you don't need the counter-protection for your particular spell.

I think it's a pity that Boseiju's ability won't work with any spell or even triggered abilities. If it was like that and entered the battlefield untapped, i would definitely consider using it. But the way the card is printed it's not that tempting...

not bad, and i remember seeing this a lot in tournaments as side board protection

It's pretty awesome, but I do wish it said something more like.. "add g to your mana pool" and then "you may pay 2 life to add 1 colorless, if that mana is spent on a spell then that spell can't be countered." Still good as it is anyways.

You can use Initiates of the Ebon Hand to turn colorless mana into black mana.

Actually Mode, based on Obliterate additional ruling you CAN cast counter spells on things that can't be countered but while for example Condescend won't counter anything you still should get your scry 2. Of course it would be stupid to cast pure counter spells on anything that used Boseiju, but things like Condescend, Rewind is not entirely pointless.

Or at least I think that's the way it works.

Worthy of sidebourd status, in combo decks that need to have their key spells go off, it can even be worth maindecking this guy.

trace of abundance. I can only be killed by board wipe and none of you instants or sorceries can be countered.

You can, Nammertime, but then the mana wouldn't make the spell uncounterable, since the black mana is different mana than the mana used to produce it. (Essentially, you would spend the 1 from this to produce black.)

for the Temporal Extortion combo, I would think that it is possible when something like Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is on your opponent's side of the field.

or may be something that just increase black spell's cost by 1

great card... if used to cast Ajani Goldmane or any other life gaining cards, this will really help you against control decks

i really dont get why people are trying to increase the cost of temporal extortion just so that you can play it uncounterable. If your going to be paying 5 mana for an extra turn why not just use time warp? It takes less cards to combo into it and dosn't require you to pay 2 life.

I know you are all gonna think its cheese but I used this in my Coalition Victory. Seems like everyone wanted to counter that spell.

Run with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to enable tapping for black mana if you don't want to use Boseiju's own ability :3

@Hentai, Yea trying to counter something that can't be countered is analogous to trying to destroy something that is indestructible imo

I'm guessing this will be Kamigawa's 'represent' card in From the Vault: Realms.

I could be off. Ravnica had a lot of Legendary Lands, kind of like how Zendikar had a lot really important non-legendary lands. But I think people remember this one slightly better than Shizo, Death's Storehouse (not even sure I got that name right), Orobo Palace in the Clouds, or Miyamoto, School at Water's Edge.

Boseiju is VERY popular in Commander...

Since it doesn't produce normal mana, this card will be forever doomed to be sideboard material. Pretty good one at that, though. I kind of like these narrow, very focused cards, really. 4/5

It now weeps as Cavern of Souls is making it look very bad.

It got out shined by Cavern of Souls.

What are you talking about? Cavern of Souls is for making Creatures unconterable, not Instants and Sorceries. They have a totally different porpouse!

Somehow a little goofy, with quite a lot of drawbacks, but it does its work, I guess... Sadly, it doesn't have a mana ability that doesn't hurt you, like the Cavern does!

@Fenix:

This and cavern of souls literally deal with totally different spells. The spells this protects aren't protected by cavern of souls. The spells cavern protects cannot be the same spells that Boseju would make uncounterable.

Unless you've found the mythic Creature Sorcery, there is no comparison to be made.

Actually, it should be called 'Boseiju, Who Shelters Only Your Instant and Sorcery Cards'.

This card is great in any deck that runs on instants and sorceries almost exclusively. It works wonders in a Niv-Mizzet commander deck.

It needs to loose the legendary clause, come into play untapped, tap for colorless mana, get rid of the loss of life part, and be able to tap for any color mana when using its uncounterable ability.

I am joking of course, but the above is whats going on with Cavern of Trolls.

Boseiju: is a giant tree. Can't tap for G.
Little rascal.

This isn't overshadowed by cavern of souls, they are 2 completely different cards. Boseiju probably sees play in legacy by more decks than COS, while COS only sees play in merfolk and goblins. It's in about every combo deck though as a 1-of. Legendary is what killed the card, but could you imagine if combo decks in legacy could run 4 of these without clogging up their mana base it would be too powerful. Imagine show and tell decks running four of these maindecked to plow over Force of Will and friends. It could lose the life clause though.
