Easy with one drops and Spawning Pit, 4/4s for 1 mana each. Damnation for best results.

Add Night of Soul's Betrayl to give all your creatures +1/+1 and all your opponents -1/-1.

Pumps Bloodghast, Nether Traitor, Ichorid and the like. Since you can somewhat easily return them to the battlefield, sacrificing them shouldn't be much of a problem.

I really like this card - that is a substantial boost for your creatures, and the drawback on the card is one that is most easily overcome by Black anyway.

What it does do, though, is paint a big target on your forehead. Obviously in a duel it doesn't make much of a difference, but when you play this in a multiplayer scenario, expect a lot of aggression to suddenly come your way - nobody else will want to see you start to benefit from this! Deadpool's second suggestion above, about accelerating it out quickly, is the best way to play this card, because it'll minimize the pain that will come your way.

Another thought - pair it with another staple black enchantment, Grave Pact! People will still want to hurt you, but they should have far fewer creatures to do it with in the turn following Death Pits.

Your opponent will wonder why you were so happy about that Quest for the Gravelord...

Use with a Pawn of Ulamog in play. An army of 2/3 Eldrazi Spawn will help lessen the blow a bit- and they can still sacrifice for mana should you need it!

Great for a second turn Dark Ritual, and worthwhile almost any time during the early game. Just swing with everybody and feed the survivors to the Death Pits.

Hm, maybe follow this up with Balance. You know, because that card didn't already break itself.

Or you could suspend Restore Balance, feel like less of an a**hole, then drop this one turn before it goes off and feel like just as much of an a**hole as ever.

Synergises very effectively with the recently released Heartless Summoning.

T1 Swamp, Dark Ritual, Heartless Summoning
T2 Swamp, Dark Ritual, This
T3+ All your guys come in +1/+1 and 2 less to cast

Sounds like a winner to me :) Of course you might not catch the 2nd Ritual that fast so you could always play a T1Duress, T2 Heartless Summoning, T3 Ritual into this and still have mana left over to cast a decent creature. Either way.

Grave Pact makes this an upgraded Wrath.

The black necrotic tar is a Phyrexian creation that made up the death pits of Rath, and also assimilated Mirrodin.
