I had been playing Magic only a short time when Weatherlight was released, and this was one of my favorite cards in that set. Its beneficial upkeep cost and negative effect are what make it particularly interesting. Until the release of Braid of Fire and Herald of Leshrac in Coldsnap, this sort of reversal was unique. For some blue/green fun, combo this card with Aluren and Manabond.

I love this card, once you get it in play, nothing can stop you from getting all your favorite cards. I play it in a deck with two Mnemonic Nexus which fixes the "where did my deck go?" issue if a stalemate arises.

Put an Eon Hub into play, then this, then donate. This should make your opponent concede. Bring a helmet.

I love this art. It's so psychadelic and abstract... Seems like it has some meaning you can't quite understand.

The card itself is also quite interesting.

Run with Obstinate Familiar. Also, loading your deck up with flashback cards would let you interact with your opponent on their turn even without a hand. Elixir of Immortality would also be handy.

Hmmmm, Jace's Erasure was my first thought. Back in the day I tried to use this thing but never could find the right trick. More options today.

I asked a friend a while back during a game why he had put Ivory Tower and Ensnaring Bridge into the same deck. "Just wait and see", he said, "It'll make sense soon enough.".

If any new player ever asks you 'so, what's the best deck in Magic? what do the Pros who have been doing it forever play? what is Vintage like?'

just point them at this card, and say 'it's wierd. ridiculously overpowered, but...wierd.'

not trying to say Psychic Vortex is the Tenth Power Nine or anything, but I feel it IS the exemplar card of 'really really strange things you can do in Magic that are really really broken'

Wow, before I saw the last clause about sacrificing a land and discarding a card, I thought this was a strictly better Mind Unbound. All things considered, it still is a better card, if not strictly.

I'm getting an idea to use this card with Tombstone Stairwell.

this card would be awesome if it didn't force it's controller to sacrifice a land...

edit: after getting 2.5/5 avg from 4 users, i thought this card over. and i take back my original statement. you should be drawing lands with this anyway. plus with stifle or trickbind on an isochron scepter and/or a library of leng, you can basically turn this into a sac-able, cheaper CMC for mind unbound. balanced yet powerful. great card.

plus the art is awesome. reminds me of the book from hokus-pokus

Blue draw? I'm sure it's abusable in some way.

Someone commented that "this card is useless because you have to sacrifice a land" but if you got fastbond out and ivory tower out since you could potentially be drawing a ton of cards because of the vortex, you could be getting a ton of lands which means; if you got fast bond out you can go ahead and play them all and despite losing 1 life per land played you will have previously gained life from ivory tower possibly balancing the life loss.
