looks like fun for a mid-range black deck. The damage probably won't catch up with you until your opponent is dead.

The flying makes him better than his brother, Gallowbraid.

He's... Just bad guys. 5 mana in black... let's see what that can buy us real quick as an alternative... Cairn Wanderer for a dredge deck would be a million times better than this cat. If you're looking for a Legendary to be your general, Chainer, Dementia Master will pull anything big out fo your graveyard for only 3 mana and 3 life and also give it a bonus. He's a stud. Chimney Imp Possibly one of the greatest cards ever. Consume the MeekClear the field so your 4 cost you dropped the turn before can get in. Crypt Angel Is just straight up better, sure, it's only a 3/3, but it has recursion built in and pro white. The only things that get rid of it at that point are red spells, so unless your opponent is playing red and has burn left in his hand turn 5, you've got card advantage and field advantage. Demigod of Revenge Makes this card just look BAD. Deity of Scars Does the same thing. Fendeep Summoner makes 2 copies of himself to swing with Ghastlord of Fugue does 1 less damage, but he is unblockable and has no drawback Liliana Vess is a 5 cost. Way, way more of a threat than this guy. Necrologia pay 6 life, draw 6 cards is better than having this guy out for 3 turns any day.

better than gallowbraid only if your opponent has no answers to flying.

It's always interesting to see old cards that make Flying such a huge advantage.
What i mean is that before, flying used to do things like this. Either it will make you sacrifice a creature, or lose some life, and if it doesn't have these effects, then it's Power/Toughness isn't equal to it's CMC (EG Runeclaw Bear has an equal P/T -> CMC)
Thank god for R & D for changing this... and maybe screwing up again. Now with cards like Storm Crow, i don't think the game will EVER be fair again.

Or you can go old-school and compare him to Juzám Djinn. Sure, he doesn't fly, but he also costs 1 less, and the life loss never increases. Oh, and he's also tougher, though that won't be relevant too often.

FINALLY, something strictly better than this guy: Bloodgift Demon! (Well, until it gets Arrested and you have no sac outlet...)

Context is everything, guys. While there are tons of better 5 CMC black creatures available now, don't forget the huge effect of Dark Ritual on the game at the time this was printed. A first turn Morinfen could be devastating if you didn't have Swords to Plowshares in your opening hand. Think about it - what low CMC removal options do you have during the Weatherlight era? At 4 toughness, even Lightning Bolt cannot do the job alone. As a flyer, it can bypass many blockers. As a black creature, Dark Banishing and Terror do nothing to it.
The obvious comparison is to Gallowbraid. Flyers can chump block Morinfen all day, mitigating any of its damage, but Gallowbraid can roll right over weenies if chump blocked, including White Knight and the like. However, as a flyer it can make it past a lot of creatures completely. It's really a matter of preference between the two. But it's quite silly to compare this to something much newer like Demigod of Revenge due to power creep - of course it's going to be much worse by comparison.
