I'd use it in my Heros of Magic Forever deck but Storm Crow is just about as good pound for pound as this guy and he'll take up my five drop of Chimney Imp

These defensive oriented and bland blue creatures are absolutley fascinating.

Please make more of these Wizards.

Because Sky Ruin Drake was to powerful to put into a core set?

Hey, come on guys, be nice to the crab.
It's not his fault a time rift tore him away from the early days when Craw Wurm was threatening and Serra Angel was the big bad flier. I'm sure he's very popular in his proper time period.
i'm absolutely loving the "we're definitely seeing more dominaria!" flavor text of this card.

Comeooon, you cannot touch the story of dominaria's rift in a miserable core set.

Alright! I'm gonna get four for my storm crow deck!
Just kidding. This is terrible. This should be 3 mana at most. 2 mana would be better (and NO, that would not be broken. Or Kraken Hatchling (which doesn't see much play) would be broken.)
I know that blue shouldn't have very strong creatures, but blue should make up for it with creatures with abilities. Vanilla creatures belong in green and white.
Only 10 people in the entire world will play this, ever.

BUT I LOVE THE ARTWORK!!!

Useless crabs seem to be a blue staple in every recent set. What the eff.

This dude is awesome. The artwork is so awesome! Aside from Combust of course, his large behind is much welcomed for a blue creature. Yeah yeah, not good in Standard etc. boo hoo. Blue (maybe not in Standard) has much use for vanilla creatures, for when a Blue deck wins, the ultimate cause is not really the creature(s) that killed the opponent(s), it was... other stuff. The dude that lands the killing blow is simply a matter of aesthetic (like most other aspects of the game- or at least it should be).
It's nice to have a crab that doesn't get Bolted to death for a change. The sooner I can let a crab stick, the sooner I can let other players' spells resolve (under their control).

Yeah! Crab Tribal!!

I would call this card obscenely overcosted if it were 4 CMC!!! But 5, FIVE CMC for a 2/5 with absolutely NO ABILITIES??? WHY ON EARTH (well, DOMINARIA, in this case) WOULD WIZARDS EVEN MAKE A CARD LIKE THIS??? IT IS POINTLESS!!! NO ONE with half a braIn is going to put this in their deck by choice! The only time this card will ever be used is in drafting tournaments. (And, even still, I would choose just about any other card over this one.)

I must say, though, the artwork is PHENOMENAL!!! It's a shame that it will never be seen.

centurion: I beg to differ, 2 mana would be broken, a standard 2-drop is a grizzly-bear thing with some tiny powerup (war priest of thune, fledgling griffin, etc),and if they are monocolored and only need one of said colored mana, they should not have power or toughness above 2 without some kind of drawback.

And they didn't reprint Glacial Wall, why? I'd much rather pay 3 for a 0/7.

Fortunately M11 seems to have far less useless filler commons like this than other core sets. Hopefully there will be even less in M12.

What a nice throwback to Time Spiral. I love how this card encourages newer players to investigate Magic's past.

And to all you people complaining about how bad this card is: give it a break. It's ONE card. If every single card was at least as powerful as people are protesting that this should be, then the game as we know it would be very different. As Rosewater said, by definition, there have to be bad cards. They make the good cards better simply by comparison. Cards like this allow newer players to make mistakes and learn from them, and fill some of the finite design space that each new set nibbles away at.

For those looking for some further reason as to why this was printed (as it IS strictly worse than the recently printed Sky Ruin Drake), I say that wizards needed a non-flyer-high-toughness-late-game-blue creature to take the place of Horned Turtle, and a bad-ass looking crab fit the bill.

They shouldn't print cards like this, even in a core set. I mean, the siege mastodon is better!

Filler is filler, sure.
This is just flat out bad. Filler doesn't have to SUCK....it just needs to be less powerful.
The only message this sends to a new player, is the crappy common you have 20 of = wasted money.
That aside, I love the artwork.

Its kind of lame when they decide to make pointlessly weak commons, I mean, there are some actually good commons out there, like Qasali Pridemage.

I dislike the mentality that most commons have to be unplayable in serious decks.

I usually keep the cards I have recently bought inside a fatpack box. One day when I opened the box to look at my cards, I saw that one of the corners on one of them was very bent, probably from being rubbed against when the box cover was opened and closed repeatedly. Immediately my heart shuddered, since this is an awful thing to happen to a card as any Magic player can relate. When I looked at the card and saw that it was this one though, an immediate sigh of relief ran over me at the averted loss.

Hmm. Clear Time Spiral reference, but I wonder if it might be a bit of a Scars of Mirrodin preview as well? We'll see.

Oh yeah, don't play it. But admire the art!

Even in Limited, you might run this but you're not happy about it. Costs about one mana too much even in that environment. Obviously a complete write-off for any form of Constructed play at two power for five mana.

I still rated it at 1.5. For me to go lower than that, a card has to be of no value at all or even a liability; being seriously overcosted isn't enough.

★★★☆☆ (3.8/5.0) (3 votes)
I'm not sure why everyone hates this card. He's a solid 5/5 on flavor because of the flavor text and the art is absolutely sick. He is by far not a great creature, but he's a freaking house in ground battles in M11 limited. I've never been disappointed to have a 5-toughness creature on my side of the board.

And, just because, go go crab tribal! I think I may try it out.

I tested this in a SUPER budget U/W deck made with bad draft leavings and, believe it or not, it was surprisingly good. It has a huge butt, and can absorb pretty much any burn played in the casual decks room, as well as attacks from most threats, it can kill a surprisingly large number of creatures while itself staying alive, and my opponents would refuse to send removal at it, so it survived and occasionally even got a kill. Overall, it's way better than I ever expected...
That said, I replaced it with the strictly-better Siege Mastodon pretty quickly. And it did even better. I'm sure there's a message here, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is.

I bet if it were 4 CMC it would be 2.5-3 stars easy despite still being under the curve. Blue likes big toughness and such for less. At 3CMC this would be a beast in the ranks of LeatherBack Baloth.. I'm not kidding! -2 power to get teh same thing in blue w ould be pretty fraggin good! Rare even!

Too expensive for my tastes, but it gets the job done in blue.
Keep in mind that there are some far superior cards at common, at the same cost. This card isn't terrible, just outdone.

What I'll leave unsaid is whether or not a Crab Tribal deck is essential. :)

Being worse than Siege Mastodon is not a good place to be. But we are talking about blue creatures versus white creatures here, and fatties no less. Well, they need something to hold off Cudgel Trolls and Spined Wurms, at least for a turn, right? Ah, who am I kidding, they can't hold up to the glory of the Greater Basilisk.

This is, without a single iota of doubt, the most glorious invention to ever leave WotC R&D. It's a perfect target for Goblin Tunneler/Writ of Passage, as well as withstanding most burn spells.

Not to mention being strictly better than Spire Monitor during the ever-present scenario of your opponent controlling Grand Abolisher and Bower Passage.

Clearly the strongest and most reliable creature ever printed. 5/5. Lucky not to be banned.
