Personally, I'm less concerned about BS Angel, and just very, very happy that this thing fries Kor Firewalker. Unless I totally misunderstand 'protection.' Which, you know, is very possible, as it still confuses the heck out of me.

@Spags- You're correct, as you can't actually target the Firewalker. You could damage it with this, but you can't target it, so it's a moot point.

No, Spags, I am afraid this does not rid red of the firewalker. (Sadly.) Protection does not "counter" anything. It merely keeps it from being targeted, meaning you cannot choose firewalker as a target.

@Noobmag: Unfortunately, you're quite correct. If it was just 2 mana for 5 damage against a white or blue creature it would be pretty balanced. The no prevention pushed it a little far, the no countering pushed it well over the edge to powercreep. A few things could have been done to make this card less powerful but no less sideboard material for tournaments where Mythic sees play with its 4x Baneslayer Angels running over your dragons. I'm glad to see a red answer to BA, but I wish it could have been more balanced for what it gives.

Red's color hoser needed the "can't be countered" and "can't be prevented" clauses, or otherwise it would be complete garbage compared to what the other colors got. In fact the only decks that would run it is monored and that's because they have nothing better to do, while with these clauses something like a jund deck might run this over doom blade.
-White's color hoser costs 2 mana, but hits ANY permanent, and not just that it's exiled. -Black's color hoser costs 1 mana and flat out destroys the creature (while red is 5 damage. Granted not a lot can live through 5 damage, but it might come up). -Blue's color hoser costs 2 mana, and being a counter it can deal with instants and sorceries.
"Balance" is largely relative to the pool of cards available. Maybe in a void combust would be balanced without the two clauses. But not in standard.

@ mdakw576 I think you missed the point. This "answer" to a unbalancing factor will now need to be "answered" in future design. How many white creatures actually need to be fried by this? Which blue creatures does this not kill? It can't be prevented (to even some white/red balance) and can't be countered (that includes blues cycle card). It was an effort to balance a mistake, and it will instead provide anything spashing red with some severe blue hate.

"Combust can't be countered by spells or abilities."
Is there anything left that could counter Combust, then? Or is this Wizards' new way to say "can't be countered"? (Would Draining Whelk work, maybe?)

That horse is amazingly undisturbed by the fact his head has just exploded so violently.
Either way, this card rocks hard for Red. There's barely a blue control deck creature this won't kill (ones without shroud anyway), and funnily enough, it'll drop Bankslayer for two mana. Swish.

@DarthMohawk - Draining Whelk counters a spell through an ability. However, if a spell saying that it can't be countered is targeted by Draining Whelk, it will still gain the counters. So if someone was casting this, and you used Draining Whelk in response, you'd get a 3/3 and then Combust would resolve as normal.
I believe that they added the "spells or abilities" to clear up confusion about rules. If a target becomes illegal, such as having Vines of Vastwood used on it in response to something like Terminate, then that spell would be countered. If a card simply says "can't be countered" it could be misinterpreted as something that could be cast through effects like Vines. I'm not sure if I explained that correctly.
Does this get around Frost Titan's annoying permafrost spell shield even if you don't pay ? I just wish it did one more damage... I really, really hate Frost Titan.

Or splash green and add Vines of Vastwood which is an amazing response to pretty much any constructed creature removal. There is ways to deal with Combust.... But it is quite strong. 5/5
Hey maybe we should thank Wizards for making cards like this one... blue control decks have dominated the tournament formats for how many years now? Cards like this might entice people into constructing something they enjoy playing as opposed to running into so many mirror control matches in tournies... Maybe its just me, but I don't see any original skill in going to a tournment, and sure maybe you win, but your deck was the same s**t as five or ten other players. Ok so you modify it slightly, but then you have the audacity to try to pass it off as your own creation? Who you fooling other then yourself...?
MtG needs more Rogue players and not a pack of 0/1 sheep followers...
Wizards are cruel against monored burn, We finally get a 5 damage spell, and now standard is flooded with titans and wurmcoil engines with toughness 6.

Yes, it does get around Frost Titan's barrier, although you'll need to ping for one to finish the job.
Since Titans have largely replaced the Angels this doesn't have the same appeal that it once did. Still a decent draft sideboard card if you can pick it up late.

Yay, baby! This past FNM, my opponent was playing with Gideon, Jace 2.0, Venser, and Karn. I sideboarded in the combusts solely to deal with his Gideon. He SBd a leyline of sanctity. So at first, I was like.....uhoh. I can't burn his planeswalkers anymore since I can't target the player and then redirect to the walkers. And then I remembered your post!
And he had his Gideon at 4 loyalty, and I was like, "Why don't you just turn him into a creature and end this game?" And he was like, "But then you'll just snap him." I told him to notice how Gideon's "ultimate" prevents damage when he's a creature (....kind of surprised he didn't know that). So he smiled and attacked. Then I cast this combust....he wasn't too happy with that.
Whatevs, man! He won 2-0 against me, and each game was a shutout in my opinion. I was just happy that I got to do this scenario. Felt great!

And Blue is actually just coming back into power. It took a big hit with the loss of Cryptic Command and really hasn't seen anything to replace it until Mana Leak and Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Now even he got banned... O_o
But I do agree with you on the fact that the game has devolved into whomever can best copy a deck they find online. I can't completely blame Wizards as it is a difficult problem to solve but they aren't completely innocent as they have taken a lot of shortcuts in the name of making a dollar, seems like more so lately. Combust (red) - Deathmark always works for 1‚ this USUALLY works for 2.
Deathmark (black) - A one mana mono-Terminate.
Flashfreeze (blue) - Hard Cancel for U less.
Celestial Purge (white) - Strictly better than Iona's Judgement.

Redirect / Unsummon
Swerve / Curfew / Venser, Shaper Savant
... but you can respond
