actually, in my opinion this is the second best titan.

It's REALLY nice that he's hard to get rid of. VERY nice. If he had shroud I think he would be up to par with the rest of the Titans.

His secondary ability is pretty poor. Most removal doesn't cost that much to play, and by the time he's put out by a blue player, the opponent should have more than enough mana to get rid of him. Narcolepsy, Doom Blade, Path to Exile...even Unsummon.

Of course, thats not to say he's bad because he's weak to removal, its just that there's better blue options available for that other ability. The tapping creatures is a fun one, though.

I agree, they sort of messed him up a little. Frost for Blue, and Inferno for Red are "opposites" which doesn't really fit the cycle in my opinion (if it were Sun Titan and Moon Titan or something maybe).

In my opinion he should be Storm Titan, with Shroud and "Whenever Storm Titan enters the battlefield or attacks return target permanent to its owner's hand." (Or Illusory Titan)

I mean, just look at his art. He's standing on a Snow-Covered Mountain. That's not blue at all.

I wouldn't say this is weaker than the other titans, per se; it's just less flamboyant.
The effect isn't nearly as flashy, doesn't mean it's less useful.

Really disappointing card. Probably the worst titan. His only redeeming quality is that he's a 6/6 for 6 mana in blue... which doesn't happen too often.

He still sucks though.

Here's the exact conversation I had with an opponent who drafted this at prerelease:

Opponent- I play frost titan! Yay!
Me- Oh no, now I have to pay 2 more for doomblade!
Opponent- Yesssss!
Me- Well.... I'm gonna do it anyways. *taps 4 and plays doomblade*

He MIGHT be breakable with lullmage mentor though. Just throw really cheap spells at him and LET the ability counter them... and get a merfolk token. Then, when you get 7 merfolk, its pretty much gg. I dunno. It MIGHT work if you could somehow recycle some kind of targeted spell.

I'd say this titan is worse than primeval titan. Then again, all titans other than primeval titan are worse than primeval titan.

Don't underestimate that tapping ability though. It shuts problem creatures down, especially those that can come back from the graveyard (Vengevine anyone?). However, this titan is not that great by itself, like some of the other titans (Primeval, Inferno, and Grave).

This card works best as a piece of a machine, performing a very powerful function in that machine. It is beautiful in UW control: It's big enough to be a win condition, and it operates as a piece of control at the same time. Combos beautifully with gideon jura, and as a last resort, can defend against gaea's revenge

As for giving him shroud: NO. Remember, he runs in blue, meaning counterspells. What he does is make it much easier for blue to keep him from getting killed by cheap removal. If he had shroud, he would be better than all the other titans. By a long shot.

He doesn't need shroud. His evasion ability is well suited and MUCH more flavourful. Plus you could always 'freeze' your opponent's land when you attack with him.
Shroud (or 'troll shroud') tends to suggest an ability to hide. This guy cannot hide at all, but instead he is resistant to magic :)
I love it.
The card doesn't need flavour text because the art and the rules text say it all.

EDIT: Instead of giving him shroud, perhaps the 'magic resistance' effect should have been raised to 3?

I really like this guy. he's hard to get rid of, AND he can tapout a baneslayer. I also forgot to mention this, but if you think about it, this guy may be the best of the titans, for DEALING with titans. If you think about it, all the other titans effects trigger when they come into play or attack, so if you can get this guy on the field, you can stop your opponent from getting 2 extra lands a turn, or bringing back cmc3 cards from the graveyard, or even putting 2 2/2 tokens into play. This guy is, and will probably always remain to be, MY favorite titan.

This card was probably way more powerful when it was first tested:

Frost Titan

Shroud

Whenever Frost Titan enters the battlefield or attacks, tap up to 2 target permanents. Those permanents don't untap during their controller's next untap step.

The abilities it has now feel like watered down versions of those abilities.
They could have at least given it flavor text. :-(

People, he's a 6/6 Blue creature for 6 CMC, very rare trait for blue to have, and he has natural counterspell protection against those meant him harm. The Lock-Down ability to me is a bonus, a REAL beneficial ability that can cost your opponents the game. He can even lock down Primeval Titan as well as the other Titanic counter parts. And don't forget, he's not on his own, especially as blue, you can counter spells that may otherwise send him into the graveyard.

So to you people who compare him with the other titans and underestimate him, please don't, he's designed to have a specific role in penerating your opponent's defense, he has protection AND an arsenal to freeze your opponent's threatening creatures.

I think that due to his CRAZY brothers that this titan is being looked down upon, a 6/6 for 6 is pretty good value (Rare value in blue), with a dampening effect on targeting him, and a pretty cool tap ability. In limited can see him being a good creature.

In saying that, considering how sick his brothers are, and their abilities, the tap ability is not that sick that he could not have shroud, i mean consider Sphinx of Jwar Isle.

Oh well, what are we to judge magic decisions....

The titans really don't compare to eachother, because blue doesn't want to do what green wants to do and etc. In a mostly blue deck having lots of land is usually meh, and lightning bolting something is nice but not what blue is about. I played this frost titan at prerelease (opened it in a booster), and other than one game against a group of reassembling skeletons, he won me every game.

Frost titan taps one thing, then you aether adept the next biggest threat, and you can keep the field pretty well locked down like that. He is the only titan that stops other titans, essentially the anti titan, titan. Also his other ability to make kill spells cost extra seems suspect.. until you realize its really good for mana leak and soft counter spells like spell pierce. Spell pierce becomes a pseudo mana leak, and mana leak makes your opponent pay an extra 5. Also great for royal assassin in blue black, you tap any creature, royal assassin sends it to the graveyard.. good times. He also works as an anti eldrazi card for tapping them down, and with gideon jura's destroy ability.

edit: yay for censors that take off part of obvious card names.. yeesh they need to fix that, like having an automatic auto card system and then not censoring the auto card.

At first I thought he was terrible, but then realized that in Titan wars, this guy wins. In fact he can't lose, short of expensive removal, because he other Titan just never gets to untap. Generally solid (c'mon, he's a 6/6 for 6 with 2 great abilities) and situationally brilliant. 4.5/5.

Apparently it's found it's way into top tier standard constructed decks. Look at Kamiya Shogo's Titan Control:

http://wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/deck/502

It utilizes Primeval Titan AND Frost Titan with Destructive Force to really put the lockdown on your opponent.

From what I can see, every Titan is good in it's own way and each one is very powerful in the right deck, especially when you can combine two of them together.

I think the best Titan on it's OWN is Grave Titan as it can fit in nearly ANY deck with enough black mana to support it. Frost Titan is very good on it's own as well as it can always tap a land.

I'm really hoping people are just misprinting when they say "Oh, it can tap a creature."
It can tap any permanent, and keep it tapped for an extra turn.
Sure, creatures can mostly be the best bet,
But his primary ability isn't so lackluster as "Tap target creature".

Close. Tom Lapille, one of the Magic 2011 design team, has stated that the first iteration of this Titan kept two target permanents from untapping next turn, but it didn't tap them. This confused several people, so it was changed to tap and freeze a single target.

Also, this Titan was tried with Shroud, turns out being impossible to target with removal made him too strong.

I think it's the weakest titan. Along with the red one, this probably won't see play in constructed, but like all the other titans it can really wreck face in limited. Nerfing its troll shroud seems necessary considering this is a really mana efficient body for blue.

EDIT: Boy, was I ever wrong. Never noticed that he wins a titan war.

hmm... suppose my opponent cast something to kill this titian (let's say doomblade), in response, i play mana leak, so in total my opponent have to 5 extra mana to let the doom blade resolve?

another scenario is my opponent cast doomblade, he pays 2 extra to play get the card to play, can i play some counter (deprive or mana leak) to counter his spell?

I just like that fact he could be a BOMB in most blue decks. And if you're a TRUE blue player at heart, I would consider Mana Leak to be it's good partner since, if they want to, have to pay 7 mana for their removal alone, right? Unsummon? 3 for the Titan's ability, then 3 more from the "Leak." Doomblade, Condemn/ Path to Exile/ Swords to Plowshares, Fireball, something in green? Good Luck!! Also, if they target it using the swords (Sword of Fire and Ice or Sword of Light and Shadow), Use any of your OWN bounce spells to protect it. And let's not forget, it's BLUE, it TAPS things (and keeps them tapped for another turn), and it s a 6/6 for BLUE for 6 CMC!!

When I first saw this card I thought it was decent, then after thinking about it decided that it was unplayable.

Then I played with one. Giving blue the ability to lock down permanents every turn and win every titan war is great, even more deadly with counter support.

@ A3Kitsune

O_O. They tried what I would have suggested and players were confused about it? Well, I guess this has something to do with the "when he attacks". They could have used counters to mark the selected creatures or added an "target tapped permanent doesn't untap" restriction.

By the way. I don't like blue creatures with shroud. Of course, it supports the blue gameplay of countering everything until you have the mana for a Sphinx. But to make blue a real color beside counterspells, they shouldn't give blue shroud. Transfering shroud into "unless he/she pays 2" doesn't make it better. I believe that green should have creatures with shroud and blue should get more cards like Cranial Extraction to prevent destruction on the first hand. You win more battles if you are prepared than being protected.

his ability's seem a lot weaker then the other titans having to pay a extra 2 to target him sounds pretty useless you need 6 mana to play him and kill card are usually 2-3 mana so they will easily have enough mana to play one on him other spells and abiltys that taget your appoint usually coast even less mana. The tapping ability seems kind of week as well lorthose can tap 8 times that many permanents I really dont see why this guy sells for 6$s.

Nice to have in, 6 for a 6/6 is great. The counter is good, but the odds of your opponent having 2 extra lands is pretty high. Don't count on red elemental blast not hitting. All in all, he's pretty good.

You know, I thought the exact same thing.. That was, until I got my butt kicked at my local FNM by a mono blue control deck. My opponent played multiple Spreading Seas to render my lands essentially useless, drops a Frost Titan to tap out my only creature, then on the following turn pays the kicker cost of Rite of Replication to create 5 copies of frost titan tapping out my entire field. I became a sitting duck and proceeded to take 36 damage the following turn.. Needless to say, that was not a fun game..

What seemed (initially) to be the weakest link of the titan family may in fact be the best of the bunch. Frosty's recent showing of top 8's in states seems to support the fact that he was vastly underrated. Anything with Blue in it likely has the potential to be the best of the cycle, as witnessed with the Boon cycle, Ancestral Recall 100000x > Giant Growth & Healing Salve , as well as the Command cycle Cryptic Command 100000000x > Incendiary Command % Profane Command.

In the case of Frosty though, R&D attempted to nerf him as much as possible, and as such his rightful color pie keyword of shroud was instead changed to a much less potent pseudo-shroud. This is in line with R&D's attempt to tame blue as seen with the devolution of Counterspell into jank like Rune Snag or Mana Leak.

what finishers you run in UW control really depend on your deck, obviously ha. if you own any vensers then frost titan and sun titan are two really good choices for repeated use of his first ability. in my UW i run two BSA and three sphinx of Jwar Isle with sun titan. I love the sphinx but the printing of the titans and wurmcoil engine competes with the 6 cmc of the the sphinx. idk if this helps but the titans right now seem to be the top finishers imo.

Im not underestimating him, but why not just give him troll shroud or something. You just payed 6 mana with blue so 2 extra mana for a doom blade is no big deal. Then again, if you have counters in your hand you can make them over invest to get rid of him then just counter it. Even tho that seems like a cool strategy, ide much rather just have shroud or something. It wouldn't be broken and it would make the lockdown that much harder to deal with. Then you could just use ur counters for other things rather then worrying about protecting your titan.

@TheWrathOfShane -

a 6/6 for 6 that taps& locks down significant permanents every turn AND can't be hit with anything targeted would NOT be broken? Really?

This guy is actually pretty perfect balance wise. Left unchecked, he can cause a soft lock on all the opponent's plans, or at least slow them down significantly, and that 6 power won't feel nice. His 6-toughness body is very hard for most creatures to get rid of, especially without help (meaning two-or-more-for-one). And even if they do try to gang up, his ability to tap when he attacks means he can tap down the most significant blockers. And while he can be dealt with via removal - almost has to be, really - he makes them invest pretty heavily to do so. That's excellent value for 6 mana.

If he had shroud (or worse, super shroud!) so you couldn't target him with removal, the ONLY way to get rid of him would be board sweepers or combat, and combat would most likely require overcommitment to counter his tapping and unfair trading for his 6 health. He'd be far too broken then.

This guy is a really, really good card. First of all, IT'S BLUE! A 6/6 blue creature? That's rare (mythic to be exact lol). Paying 6 total mana for a big blue creature is nice, but Frost Titan is flavorful as well.
Lately, Wizards has really stressed the slowing-down of games as part of the control strategy. It's not about just countering and bouncing anymore now that control can have a board presence due to tapping all of their opponents' permanents.

Frost Titan can be the best of the Titans if used in the proper deck. While the other Titans have more direct abilities, Frost Titan is an enabler. He enters the battlefield: tap your control artifacts. Next turn, he attacks: tap your defending creatures so you can't block my fatal swing. And if you try to kill him, he has natural evasion. However, the only reason I wouldn't give him a total 5 stars is because playing any type of spell to answer a creature (doom blade, pacifism, go for the throat, condemn...) are SO CHEAP and an extra 2 mana is nooooo big deal. That's what counters are for though, I guess. Still, I love him.

When I first saw this card, I was rather underwhelmed, since the other titans appeared much stronger.

Of course, that's because I completely forgot that cards don't exist in a vacuum, and that any blue creatures with any sort of inherent strength end up being unbelievably strong thanks to blue having the best support cards.

Overall, it makes me sad, since poor Inferno Titan is left all alone, since any red spell that costs more than 4 mana is usually considered unplayable, and even when he hits the battlefield all red can do is deal more damage.

*sigh*..... Poor red....

Alright, I use a blue counter deck and it is my favorite. Recantly, I got Grave Titan from a pack and I did a little Titan research and found this guy. I think that a 6/6 for 4any and 2blue mana is already good. But say that your using a blue counter deck and u just poped him out. You bolth have 6 mana and your opponent puts down Wurmcoil Engine so you attack and tap it. He throws out a Doom Blade or something similar for two mana, plus the extra two because its targeting Frosty. You counter it, and he already is down 4 mana with his Wurmcoil tapped. I think that Frost Titan is proly the worst of all but hes worth 4 dollars at my store so what the heck, throw him in. He is not "unplayable", Frost Titan is probaly a crappy titan but I think that he is worth the six cruddy mana, and is somethiing good for any blue deck.

Originally underrated, especially in comparison to the Primeval variant, Frost Titan is certainly powerful in the right decks. The combination of tapping your opponent's dangerous creature (like Baneslayer, Vampire Nighthawk, or something along those lines) and having built in evasion is nice, but this guy makes blue happy for another reason; in circumstances where the Titan itself is targeted, they'll need an extra two mana to even pass the Titan's counter. With cards like Turn Aside in mirrodin, though, you can then counter any spell that your opponent targets the Titan for only 1 mana with the added benefit of costing them two more lands just to have their spell countered.
The build is good for a blue creature, and at a modest six mana, it fits into a blue control deck's idea of the ideal control general. 4.5/5
