What the heck? Why is this card rated so low? In a Green/Black Wither deck this card is your first commandment. Your others are Devoted Druid, Necroskitter, Everlasting Torment, Blowfly Infestation, Noxious Hatchling, and Power Conduit.

Yeah, entering the battlefield with a counter counts as 'placing' it. So you could combo this with persist creatures, or Noxious Hatchlling, or any of the other cards Kidrik mentioned. Problem is, Wizards made this cost 5, which is very balanced- it takes a long time to get it on the field.

Infinite Elves Combo! Just pop this out with two Grim Poppets, put one of their counters on some poor creature, then have them continually trade counters with each other off into infinity!

Blowfly Infestation gives you infinite ETB and creature death.

Add a second Blowfly Infestation and you get infinite -1/-1 counters, plus you can replace any number of creatures with tokens of yours.

Add a second Flourishing Defenses and you get infinite tokens. (Even without a second Blowfly Infestation.)

You can combo this very well in an elf deck along with everlasting torment. With a lanawar elves and a rampant growth you can bring this combo out turn 4. Also According to the rulings you would get a token for every -1-1 counter placed. If this is incorrect could someone please inform me.
