IMO this card is is better than cranial extraction, thought hemorrhage, and haunting echoes.. It's very cheap in comparison, has split second, but the only bad thing is that you can only target a creature that's in the graveyard.

Its a combo-crippling card, especially effective when used against decks that unearth creatures alot

Mill decks usually rely on Gaea's Blessing to save them. When one hits the 'yard, I love to throw this at it. Sure they get to shuffle their graveyard into their library, but they do it with 4 less cards, and only 1 time!!!!!

@Quang: It doesn't need to be a creature; it just has to be non-basic land card.

This card is a great main, if not sideboard, card. Shatters combos like no other.

It's true, It causes players to become highlander and singleton oriented in Extended ad Legacy or justs pushes players to stay in the Type II arena Only. I'm more interested in how to sidestep the card if possible.

Fool, what will you do without your Paths and Bolts?? I so want this card. Even in a highlander format.

Soupr_dork, in case you have not gotten your answer yet, let me examine this issue with you.
"
When Emrakul is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library.
"
That looks like a good-ol' triggered ability to me. Had it said something like:
"If Emrakul would be put into a graveyard, instead" blah blah
then that would be a different story.

So you have your Extirpate in your hand, black mana ready. The fat Eldrazi hits the graveyard. It actually goes to the graveyard. When it is put into the graveyard, its triggered ability goes on the stack. Then you say,
"In response to his triggered ability upon hitting the yard..... EXTIRPATE that (so-and-so)!!"
As soon as you do so (unless he has morphed creatures), grab the cards in his hand, pull the two Emrakuls from there, then grab his library, and grab the other Emrakul from it, taking note of other snide strategies he put in his deck. Don't forget the actual Emrakul in the graveyard. Don't bother shuffling his library, because Emrakul's triggered ability will still resolve despite his absence, and the owner of the graveyard that Emrakul went into shall not hesitate to shuffle his graveyard into his library.
Also, the same goes for annoying creatures with persist, for it too is a triggered ability that triggers when the creature hits the graveyard.

love how it can hit nonbasic land as well...wasteland a dark depths and and hit it with this. In today's Legacy environment it's a viable in the Main Deck.

Can this be used as a counterspell? The current Split Second definition seems to allow it, saying "players can't play spells" as long as it's on the stack. And that would mean the spell would stay in the hand zone, yes?

You can get an emrakul with this, with makes it all the more epic. Screw you, combo!

Its really amazing, considering how some people put four copies of one win con in a deck lately (cough-Jace, the Mind Sculptor-cough)

No, it can't be used as a couterspell, it would be put on the stack on top of the previous spells and/or abilities on the stack, at which time no more activated abilities or spells could be put on the stack. After this spell is done resolving, anything else on the stack would then continue to resolve, assuming it still has legal targets, and cards on the stack have yet to hit the graveyard because they haven't begun resolving, nor are they in a players hand. This does hose reanimate decks though. It can be countered though, with one of the few things that can counter it being Counterbalance, as it's a triggered ability, not an activated ability, although you wouldn't be able to use Sensei's Divining Top to change the top three. Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is able to counter other split second cards targeting creatures, and Erayo's Essence can also counter split second cards, a few other cards can also.

Actually I believe Split Second is the evolution of the old distinction between Instant and Interrupt spells. But since everybody was playing instants the same way they did interrupts, they dropped the difference.

Now this is clear

Tome scour or Glimpse the unthinkable into their centerpiece? JtMS doesn't win games, he just facilitates winning games. Go for the bomb.

@soupr_dork

a) yes, you can use this on emrakul when he hits the GY
b) exactly what it says

still does nothing to stop the GY recycling as that goes on the stack when he hits the GY.
thus, by the time he's a legal target the recycle is triggered

I believe I have that straight

Just a reminder: After a Split Second card finishes resolving, the stack is open again, and people can add spells or abilities to the stack again.

Extirpate vs. Surgical Extraction
Both 5/5
Extirpate - Split Second
Surgical Extraction - Phyrexian mana
Fantastic cards. I want a playset (at minimum) of both.

Down to a tiny $3 with Modern Masters and Surgical Extraction.

I've always loved this card and now I can afford a playset justifiably. Something big about this card is against control decks. If you nail a crucial control spell or a crucial finisher, you can end the game right there.

It can also set up cabal therapy T2, same goes for pithing needle or revoker.
