unfortuneatly, the izzet ability is slightly overcosted. 5 mana for 3 cards? The tokens don't have haste?

That was one really nice cards, it is true that the two parts don't fit together but the Research was really interesting and the Development ont is fun, so overall a really nice card.

I definitely like the "wish" ability.

The Development is technically not as good as Tidings, but there are probably some advantages to being multicolored, versus mono blue. (Such as Cloven Casting)

FOUR wishes? This makes sideboards so much better.

How would cascade work for this say from a bloodbraided elf? Would research go off?

Actually the izzet ability sounds nice to me, even without haste its token or draw a card, both good. Its the research card that interests me most however, its like a glittering wish, but not quite as on demand since the cards are shuffled into your library. I love the wish cards though because I like to keep my artifact and enchantment removal on my sideboard, since not every deck plays with lots of either. Arguably if you have the mana its best to just tap out and use both.

Wait, you can play both Research AND Development at the same time? I thought you had to choose one or the other...

right now, research has me pulling at my hair. I used to use it to recover my imprinted cards, but I am told that with the new M10 rules, I am limited to sideboard, not the Exiled pile. Which has me REALLY confuzzled. Exile removes things from the game, but not really (which is really a headscratcher!!!)

No, you cannot use both halves at once. However, you can imprint the whole card (both halves) on Isochron Scepter by means of Research's two-mana cost, and then use either by activating the Scepter. A two-mana Development every turn ain't bad at all...

Bloodbraid Elf's cascade would trigger Research, but not Development, because it checks each casting cost separately.

unfortunately, those two parts don't suit that nicely together imo, yet Research has such an extremely interesting game mechanic. you can wish a playset of cards from your sideboard into your library for two mana, that's awesome! :)
but Development is unfortunately just a terrible version of Concentrate :/ if the process did get repeated a fourth time it would be better, then we would have something slightly inferior to Tidings at least.

Heh. Put it on a stick... then play Leveler.

@littlebeast: No, Leveler does not combo with this. Exiled/RFG is not "outside the game". It counts as an in-game zone. "Outside the game" is your sideboard in tournament play or any card in your collection in a casual game. For clarification, see the rulings on any of the "wish" cards. Burning Wish for example.

@lukemol: That may be true, but you can pull cards into your library from your sideboard after Leveler's eaten it, so you have four more turns before you deck yourself. And if it's on a stick, you can repeat the process and pull in your entire sideboard.

Yes you can use either side when cascading into this because the rule says
"If you exile a split card with Cascade, check if at least one half of that split card has a converted mana cost that's less than the converted mana cost of the spell with cascade. If so, you can cast either half of that split card."

@Kelrath: No, because if a player borrows one of your decks, he'll count as the owner of that deck when a spell or ability refers to ownership. Otherwise as simple cards as unsummon would have very funky uses or incredibly complicated wording.

It says "Choose up to four CARDS you own from OUTSIDE of the game and shuffle them into your library" It doesn't say they have to be Magic the Gathering cards or even REAL Magic the Gathering cards. It just says "CARDS" and "OUTSIDE" of the game. Technically and logically speaking of course. I'd like to see the official rules on the card though. Could be one of those broken cards with unlimited potential that hopefully they put official limits on. But if you go by the rule "Do what the card says" You could bring Pokemon or Yugioh cards (assuming you actually waste money on those :) or Fake MTG cards into the game that you created yourself.

@Gibbons:

No, because in the Magic Comprehensive Rules, a "card" is defined to be one from the Magic game. As in, real ones.

Come on. That's just silly.

@Tezz: Yep, that's how it works. Your opponent decides whether you get a 3/1 token or a card draw, and they make the decision three times. So you get some combination of three tokens/draws in total.

All the comparisons to Tidings are missing one factor: this is an instant, not a sorcery. You can cast this during your opponent's turn and get that mana back rather than burning five during your own turn. It's much closer to the new Jace's Ingenuity from M11 but isn't as reliable a draw card, since your opponent has the option to let you have those tokens instead, so you'll get the worse of the two options, whatever that may be. (Then again, getting up to nine power for five mana at instant speed is pretty good, too.)

This could be a very fun deck. more fun in casual anyway so you can have 8 (or more!) copies of each card in your grave suddenly. In other games you would put three of each in your sideboard.

Development is an INSTANT, which is why it draws 3 cards instead of 4 like Tiding. For a control deck, having mana open during opponent's turn is an advantage.

Is it just me or is there a trend these days that people don't see the difference between Instant and Sorcery? So many people commented on so many cards about how one is weaker than the other without looking at the timing advantage.

@lukemol
It actually combos with Leveler, just not in the way you're thinking. You can still grab four cards from your sideboard or collection.

Ideally, they should be four cards that will kill your opponent next turn.

Forget Leveler, you could imprint Research onto an Isochron scepter and use it over and over again to increase your library to 250 cards for Battle of Wits!

That'll surprise your opponent!

Use Research with Isochron Scepter, Battle of Wits, Lapis Lazuli Talisman, and an infinite mana combo (lets use two Palladium Myrs and a Myr Galvanizer).

Cast Battle of Wits, the two Palladium Myrs and the Galvanizer. Go infinite with the Myrs and cast the Talisman and then the Scepter exiling Research. Pay 2 from the infinite mana and tap the Scepter to cast a Research copy, pay 3 to activate the Talisman's ability and untap the Scepter, rinse and repeat. Keep doing that until you have 200 or more cards in your library, then wait a turn to win the game. Or, if your impatient, use Time Warp.

I wish they wouldn't put the really unique effects on split cards... Because I only end up wanting to use one half of the card, and am either stuck looking at the other half with no way to play it, or I try to do something contrived to utilize the other half and end up watering down the original deck concept.

I hate running a deck that has no use for half the card. It makes me feel like I'm leaving out potential.

I find it's interesting how people are talking about imprinting Research on an Isochron Scepter to come in for a left-field victory with Battle of Wits. As it's a split card, however, you can imprint Research, then pay 2 mana each turn to play Development! Constantly casting Development will give you a lot of card advantage as it ends somewhere between Ancestral Recall and a Feral Lightning that doesn't die at the end of turn. Putting nine points of power worth of attackers into play at instant speed is hard to ignore, and card drawing wins games. Having this in a Scepter Chant deck will ensure that you either reach your win conditions in time, or it will become a win condition itself.

This is probably a dumb question, but can you use Research to return exiled cards to your game? I figured since exiled cards are "outside the game", they can be returned with this card.

I once used this in response to my friend casting Telemin Performance on me. Shuffled four copies of Phage the Untouchable into my deck. Hilarity ensued :P

With Research, can one pop in cards that you already put four of? For example, if I started the game with four Fogs, could I Research for four more?

Edit: Nope

you can thank Brand for this card's existence. If Brand didn't exist prior to this card being printed, then Brand (the department at Wizards, not the card) would never have allowed a card named after a department at Wizards (in this case Research and Development or R&D) to exist. I wonder if a card called Accounting, or Marketing, or Human Resources will come out any time soon? (maybe they already have, click the autocards lol)

guys guys this is how your use this card. Imprint on Isochron Scepter and fuel the deck with Storm Crows and then pseudo-cascade with Thrumming Stone for the win.

Still brilliant card, one of my favs 5/5

If you're only planning to use the Blue/Red side, and there are no third parties to play politics with, Jace's Ingenuity is just about strictly better.
