mario, playing flame burst when you have paradic in your graveyard wont give you the counter... but it will double flame burst dealing double what it normally would once you have all the quest counters.

Flame Burst and Kindle:
In terms of raw damage, Lightning Bolt is far more efficient mana wise. In terms of card advantage though, Kindle shines better late game. In late game when bigger creatures come out, Lightning Bolt by itself may not be able to kill as well. Any creature with more than 3 toughness cannot be one-shot by Lightning Bolt later on, whereas Kindle can kill 4~5 toughness creatures at 1-1 exchange. In late game Kindle also hurts more when targeting your opponent. I think Lightning Bolt still wins out overall but Kindle is certainly a solid card.

I wonder if they decided to print this instead of Kindle just so they could use different wording?

The stacking damage is pretty nice, but unfortunately running it without 4x pardic firecat makes the damage to mana quite mediocre. And running 4 firecats is.. probably not great. It's definitely fun to ping someone for 7 or 8 damage for 2 mana though.
This was printed at a time, Lightning Bolt wasn't legal. Compared to a Shock, this isn't bad, but Pardic Firecat still suffers from the "red creatures have to be weak" drawback from that days.

When considering lightning bolt this card blows.

Interesting that this/kindle are good in more of a control red style. Why? Well in sligh/control you're just trying to kill their stuff of, which generally gets bigger as the game goes. By the time the end of the game is nigh this is probably doing a good 4-5 damage.
...okay, it's not the same bird but Ron Spencer's art all looks the same.

I rarely say this about red burns, but I actually DONT like this card, at all.
Shock for 2 mana is somewhat ordinary for burns, but the effect makes the card feel more dangerous than it actually is. In order for the damage to be any greater than 4, you would need to x4 this card, and I NEVER x4 of any card in any deck I use, because flexibility is everything to me. Because of this, I would rather play magma jet.

Good with Faithless looting too!
