A very versatile card. Hooks you up with some cheap land destruction, an 11/11, or a fog against Storm.

or a 12/12 with trample... or taplifice counter, and when I say taplifice I mean tap, pay one life, sacrifice search for land. super versatile.

I fear there are some misconceptions about what can and cannot be 'stifled'. For example, the 12/12 with Trample I see in the comment list I will assume to be Phyrexian Dreadnought. If that is the case, it is incorrect to believe it can be played without sacrificing the required creatures. That 'ability' cannot be stifled because it is a static ability (one that does not go on the stack) not a triggered or activated ability as many believe.
Still a great card, though.

actually CCGRick, you are 100% and completely dead wrong.
PD's sacrifice is a triggered ability. You can stifle it.

CCGRick, Phyrexian Dreadnought can be stifled to prevent sacrifice. I have had multiple judges confirm it, unfortunately for me at the time.

I'm afraid alot of you are wrong about what would happen if you were to stifle a Phyrexian Dreadnought. The official text on the card says, "When Phyrexian Dreadnought enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you sacrifice any number of creatures with total power 12 or greater." If you were to stifle that, it would stop everything after the word "When" thus making it so you wouldn't have to sacrifice anything. The definition of a triggered ability is anything that follows the words "When", "Whenever", or "At".

stifle and phyrexian dreadnought. 2 very expensive cards, but they make a deadly combo for sure

Yeah right... If Stifle countering "When this creature enters the battlefield..." causes this creature not to enter then Stifle countering "At the end of turn..." causes the turn not to end.
"When" and "At" are CONDITIONS for triggered abilities - just like "Pay life" or "tap" are COSTS for activated abilites. You dont counter them.

@LeoKula: It appears to be someone being bound and gagged by rays of electricity. Hence, stifled.

I first found this card when I found Leveler and wondered what I could do about it.
Looks like in the art there's a Scornful Egotist being Stifled. I think I'd die a little inside if that happened to me...

The chances are very slim that this card will ever be dead in your hand. There is pretty much always something worthwhile to counter.

LeoKula: It's a Wizard being stopped by some kind of rope-like spell. He just looks weird because it's Scourge, where everyone had turned into mutants because of the Mirari. See cards like Scornful Egotist.
ArgusDundalk: Phyrexian Dreadnought's ETB ability is a triggered ability. http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Triggered_ability Stifle's card text: Counter target activated or triggered ability.

Countering triggered abilities is quite rare and with this you can do it for just 1 mana. So useful, in so many situations.

How nice. It counters the Eldrazi's Annihilator ability.
(Yes, it does. Check the rules. Annihilator says "Whenever this creature attacks..." and that's a triggered ability which Stifle can counter. Same goes for the graveyard to library shuffle of the Eldrazi Titans. Interestingly, I think Progenitus can't be Stifled and will be reshuffled...)
Anyway, absolutely fantastic card, 5/5, no contest.
This would be the most insane card to put on Isochron Scepter apart from the usual culprits. Has the ability to stop "When creature blocks or attacks" abilities and even planewalkers (To hell with you Jace!)

Seriously, I think that I have yet to lose a game when my opponent's first turn consisted of me stifling their fetchland or wasteland. It's just that good :) Not broken, not overpowered, but powerful nonetheless.

@Kryptnyt, were you joking?
First... it would only be countered once :P... but second.. you can't counter mana abilities.. because they don't use the stack.
I mean it states it on the card.
Idk if you were joking or not?
The cheapest "land destruction" is actually mind bend or, more classically magical hack.

@Eluem He's referring to countering Fetchlands, as that is one of the most played uses of this card. Opponent pays life, sacs their land, puts the ability on the stack, you stifle, effectively destroying the land.

The card is at once a combo card, a counterspell (sorta), and a land destroyer when used against fetchlands. 5/5, if I've ever seen one.

114.4. A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself.
Then again...I'll just Stifle that idea...
I guess I can't put this on an Isochron Scepter and target itself.
Essential counters fetch lands, wastelands, cycling just to name a few 5/5

@liquidprism Actually, in the case of Isochron Scepter you're casting the Stifle during the resolution of Isochron Scepter's activated ability, and because it's an instant it can therefore be cast in response to that ability because the ability is still on the stack.
It's important to remember that this has no actual function beyond confusing new players, that considered, it comes at the low, low cost of 4 mana.
