On the other hand, I dont feel as bad for only owning one... especially since my print of the card is one of the rare prints.

the art is nice, but it doesnt fit Magic at all, it is is a modern strip mine, not something that Urza or Mishra might carve into the land

I feel like the problem wasn't with Strip Mine, but with the ridiculously powerful cards they printed after. I mean was there any reason for this to be restricted before Crucible of Worlds was printed? On its own it seems like a fairly normal card - a 1 for 1 land trade.

The first time I saw one of these (back in the day) I had no idea why it was considered too good. Now I just shudder to think about the kinds of decks that ran this...

I can't think of any good reason not to play this in a non-affinity artifact deck. But then again I'm not trying very hard to think of a reason because this card owns.

Yes, play Crucible of Worlds and you can destroy an opponent's land every turn! But this might keep you from playing basic lands or other lands, so just use Fastbond and wipe out all your opponent's lands!

I still have 4 of these to this day, 2 of which is printed in Chinese. I no longer use them tho. Just displays in my card binder :) ...that was yesterday when a buyer finally took the complete set off my binder. Now I have a a set of Captivating Vamp :)
... This art is much more beautiful than older ones...

Don't think anyone's said it yet, so, Vesuva.
Somebody said this card is only OP when comboed. Bah ha ha ha ha ha ha you're wrong.
Let's look at a different combo for a second, other than all this infinite strip mine crucible stuff,
Strip Mine + Ornithopter + Paradise Mantle This combo lets you use Strip Mine's mana gain to get mana ramp. So essentially, it's replacing itself, so then it can take out an enemy land no sweat. That puts the enemy behind by one land.
Also note, that one land can be very useful. For instance, a Cloudpost. Moving on, let's look of other things that work with Strip Mine,
First, you've got your graveyard into library effects, for instance Emrakul, Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, and a really nice one, Quest for Ancient Secrets. These effects may seem... bad... to some people, but that's why there's Expedition Map, and Trinket Mage, or any other search artifact 1 cost or less, or any other search for a land(non-basic) card. Like Diabolic Tutor, or Beseech the Queen. Feel free to use all of them, since you're just going to reuse your deck over and over and over. If you want more usefulness out of the map, throw up a Salvaging Station.
Secondly, you've got your effects that make the -1 land on self, and -1 land on enemy chance to -1 land on enemy, +1 enemy land on self, -1 land on self. Although the math says it's zero, tradgng a strip mine for a cloudpost.... good deal. Gaea's Cradle, same thing. Here is the card, Prince of Thralls. Definintely an expensive card on his own. Just ponder that for a second... I'm sure that there is more cards for this, but that was the only one I found. Moving on!
Thirdly, you've got your return effects. -1 enemy land, -1 self land, +1 self land. Of course, these are also expensive. Like Sun Titan, and Charnelhoard Wurm. Pretty expensive... but these are like the first, except more direct. Sun Titan can be activated by entering the battlefield, so I'm sure you can figure out a way to make that ridiculous. Of course, also listed here should be Crucible of Worlds... but you already know of that.
So, now that we've seen some combos.... I'm sure a consistent theme has been removing of lands on both sides. Well, that's amazing when comboed, I'm sure we've all seen. What can this card do alone though? You can bar a turn from the enemy, that's what. -1 land and -1 land can be quite dreadful. Turn 14, enemy had 14 lands, they're all excited for Emrakul in a turn. It's your turn. Strip mine! Jk on next turn Emrakul! I'll just play a Draco. Okay, your turn again? Back up to 14 lands? My turn... well, gotta pay my upkeep. Doo doo doo, draw, doo doo doo, oh hey, strip mine! I'll just use that... Oh yeah, and swing for 9. You're back up to 14 lands? Nah back down to 13. Swing for another 9! Oh, you've got more lands? Nahhhh..... back down to 13. Swing again..! You're dead!
Strip Mine can hold an enemy at bay. If it's your turn, and you're up against a blue, and you're about to play something nice and that blue has his two islands untapped... and you're worried... you don't want to take that risk..... slap down a strip mine and say, HA NO COUNTERSPELLFORUUUUU! And then throw down whatever you've got. A simpler example of this is winning with one drops. Turn 1, forest, throw down a green one drop, turn 2, strip mine, throw down another green one drop, kill their land. turn 3, strip mine, throw down another green one drop, etc. Turn 5, you'll have 5 one drops on the field, they have absolutely nothing. You'll have done 10 dmg, just from one drops. 3 mana cost for a card will begin to look real expensive.
Play it with elves and crucible of worlds and you really won't have to worry about that land coming into play each turn, you'll have all the mana you'll need.

OK, forget all the combos, forget all the exotic cards it's great against, and just look at it in a simple situation. Let's say that your opponent is playing multiple colors, and is a little low on one of his land types. That's not all that unusual, is it? Well, take out whatever land he's only got one of, and his annoying slight mana screw turns into a cripplingly significant mana screw. That's why this card is mythic-worthy.

I hate it when opponents win by my manascrew. I especially hate it when they create that manascrew themselves. I particularly especially hate it when they use utterly OP cards to do so. That's why I loathe this card and despise all who use it.

How can one not like the art on this? John Avon does some of the best land art in Magic, and this piece is definitely no exception. The colors are really vibrant and the foiling works well to give the art a nice depth. I know a lot of people like the old art "because nostalgia", much like how I prefer the old art on Temple Garden, but this art definitely isn't a downgrade in any way.
I'll give this a 4/5 for its potential, because there are several reasons that keep me from giving it a 5.
1) Taps for colorless 2) You have to sacrifice a land of your for one of theirs, which can work out for you most of the time, but... 3) In a 2+ color deck, I would hate to keep a 2 land hand (or even 3 land if the draw is bad), with this as one of my lands, because I might not be able to sacrifice it, and it is denying me a color I might need.
However, it doesn't enter tapped, and its combo potential along with its general ability to wreck your opponents plans will get a 4/5 from me, because this is no perfect card by any means imo
