A new contender for black 1 drops that discard a card from the opponent's hand.

They might as well have just replaced that poor fellow with Knight of the Reliquary for all that subtlety is concerned.

Smotherseize with no life cost. It has some nice synergy with Cabal Therapy.

This will also find great use in eternal formats. Most threads you have to get rid of don't cost more than three mana anyways. Except for Force of Will maybe. And if that card is in your opponent's hand, this spell possibly won't resolve anyways.

This is the first thing i shall buy in rise of eldrazi since i dont play standard. it cant grab force of will but there's thoughtseize and duress so it aint a problem.

Lets see... I take away your blightning, bolt, terminate, pulse, putrid leech, sprouting thrinax, white knight, knight of the reliquary, basilisk collar, and on and on and on. Not to even mention how good it is in the mirror match. This card is great early game and mid-game.

This is a solid card; I got hosed with it in draft the other night, lost a really nice rare out of the gate, lol.
The 3CC restriction is a little rough, but there are plenty of strong cards that fall into that range.

Just like Smother, it maybe not good against every deck but it's definitely a card for the main deck.

You don't need to discard Force Of Will if you wreck their hand discarding all their Brainstorm or whatever else. You could just as easily make Force Of Will become a dead card in decks running 3 colors. They need a card to pitch to FOW and sometimes they won't have many. Also, if someone pitches a card to counter you, they knock out two cards from their hand, then when you Hymn To Tourach them you will feel better. FOW is one of the last cards I reach for. It is the opposite of card advantage. Why would you choose it as a target?

idk about this card, apparently duress isn't even commonly played in standard, or so I've heard.
In extended it's outclassed by thoughtseize (just like every other similar card), and in legacy/vintage it can't even grab force of will so the chances of it being played there is very low anyway.

I like this card over Duress in most situations because, like Mode said, most of the cards you are going to want to force your opponent to discard cost 3 mana or less anyways, and if your opponent doesn't have any noncreature spells in hand, don't sweat because this can nab a creature under 3 mana cost too. Good against the R/W/G ally deck running around standard right now.
Duress is best used right before you cast your game finisher to make sure your oponent wont counter it or at least make them use it up on Duress itself. I have a deck that can produce 8 mana on turn 4 to cast Duress followed by a Violent Ultimatum, a lot of fun.
Inquisition of Kozilek is a bit more versatile than Duress, because you are also able to pick Spot removoval, Combo parts, most of Counterspells, Ramping spells and even -depending on your strategy - early Creature drops from your opponents hand.
Althought it's not in the same league as Thoughtseize, because there are still limits by picking cards with CMC <=three. The loss of 2 life per resolve is, for most matchups except for burn decks, not relevant.
In Vintage and Legacy there are no decks in the Metagame with no targets and it pitches everyting from Combo cards until Creature Lords except Force of Will. In Extended there are only a few decks where you can pick fewer than 50 percent of the cards e.g. Llark Decks. In most matchups you can pick 70-90 percent from nonland Cards from your opponents hand.
The upcoming Standard Decks will surely profit of a versatile discarding spell.
Prost!

Does anyone realize how much this common was played at worlds? Every single control deck had several copies of Duress or Inquisition of Kozilek in their deck. Some decks played both and most of the time it was in the main not the board. I have been using it recently in a similar UB build but keeping Memoricide in the main deck. By having a first turn look at their hand I know what card to pick when I play a fourth turn Memoricide. I used to board it because I didn’t know what was in their hand or deck until game two. With this card there is no longer an issue!

Potter, this is uncommon, unless you are saying it was commonly played. But the way you worded it, it sounds like you think it is a common, while it isn't.

Honestly, while not a better card than Thoughtseize, I would sooner spend money on a playset of these than of those. Honestly what are you going to go after with a 1CMC discarder? You're going to try to get the base of your opponent's game, the combo enablers, the early game creatures, the accelerators, not the top of their mana curve.
This is functionally a Thoughtsieze for a fraction of the price and very little loss in utility. Great card.

i know this card is good, but isnt the only advantage over duress that it can discard creatures? (yes i know it removes a lot of the nasty troubles like squadron hawk)
id put this as more useful than duress, but id definitely keep duress in the sideboard for control decks (i hate you jace)

This seems worse than Duress in Standard, especially mid to late game. Unless you're worried about cheap pro-black creatures or creatures with good "comes into play" abilities. I guess Squadron Hawk and Stoneforge Mystic are two creatures you might want to take out early with Inquisition. Any thoughts on Inquisition versus Duress?

And now with Appetite for Brains, only land cards are safe.... sure 4 or cmc are discarded, but you can essentially take out anything in the game if you have ...

I see this card much more in legacy than anyone seems to give it credit for. Most every major threat is gonna come early so it hits all of them and considering most of the strongest decks out there range from aggro loam, maverik, elves, delver, rug, countertop this card tends to be a take all of importance. Jace, the mind sculptor is a pain in every black decks back side but that's why you play therapy, hymn, duress or thoughtseize along side this. this card deserves at least 4.5/5 stars.

@Silence9: This is much better than Duress for the early game as it can target creatures as well and it can really damage aggro decks. This is used far more than Duress competitively.

I think this card is SO close to being better than Thoughtseize in Legacy. The only thing makes it worse is Force of Will as there is really nothing else that relevant above cmc3. Maybe Jace, the Mind Sculptor, but he is quite vulnerable to Daze.
