Awesome card in the late game for mono-Black (or a multicolour with heavy emphasis on Black). Give him trample if your opponent has flyers inplay and it will be good times, forever. Or until the game ends, whichever comes first.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever REALLY played Nightmare, maybe because back then I was given a choice between him and Visara the Dreadful. Which is pretty damn obvious. :P But still, Nightmare seems really overcosted to me, plus he's just so easily dealt with (removal is pretty insane now, so many good spells). I'd much rather smash some faces with my Demigods than try and make this horsey worth my time. He's... just average. 3/5

Am I the only one who thinks the current artwork looks like a horse zombie and nothing like any nightmare I've ever seen before? The original artwork (this one came in for 7th edition) is the quintessential nightmare.

One of my first rares. Pretty cool, but I've never really included her in a deck since the old days. *sigh* maybe someday when black gets mana acceleration back...

nice budget card, but not too much of a gamebreaker in most games

used to have a 3rd maybe 4th edition of this. got it as a gift one year. just wish i knew what the hell happened to it. personally i think that the cc should include double black. for a creature so focused on swamps it only has one black in its casting cost?

While I prefer the older one for nostalgia, I like the art of this one too... Maybe if it costed or it could be better, but however is a cla.ssic one, plain and simple! In casual is always spectacular!

@Shadows_Vengeance: I don't know how you define a "nightmare", but I don't think that neither this one or the older is "more nightmare" than the other. I think that Melissa Besson took inspiration from the paint by Fuseli, where the nightmare is the imp on the woman's stomach, not the horse in the foreground, that is there because a pun: "nightmare" derives from ‘mara’ (imp) rather than ‘mare’ (horse). Then Carl Critchlow based his draw on Besson's one, I think...

it's actually a really good card, in a mono black deck it will almost always be a 6/6 flyer for 6 mana and potentially more if you keep playing swamps, i once got it to 12/12, ended up winning. sure it will problably never ever see play in a pro tour or any high competitive game but its a very good choice to kick some ass at an FNM.
BEST ART EVER, NO QUESTION.

first off, i think the art is great, it looks much more dark and night-ish than the old flaming one. second off, this is not overcosted. in a mono black deck, it is basically a 6/6 for 6 (or more), in casual this card is great, as games are not usually over as quickly as they might be in constructed tournament matches.

Comparing to visara is not really fair, since visara is kinda broken even by modern standards.
This is a great card, a shame to see it cycle out, a flying 6/6 6CMC in black that gets even stronger, it's not undercosted (of course you wouldn't have it in multi colour, goes without saying). It can kill baneslayer. I like it, though I think the art could have been more dramatic, it just looks like a black, underfed horse surrounded by gas. Liked the old one better, both with art and flavour, the flavour text of the old one perfectly explains it, the new flavour text isn't as nice.

I can't believe where we are at.
Nightmare is not overcosted.
Nightmare is always a game changer in mono-black.
Of course you are NOT going to use it anywhere else than Casual.
It should NOT cost anything less.
More (B) in the cost would make it more coherent, but whatever... it's already "mono-black".
The card is perfect as it is, and should be considered a standard.
Oh and the artwork is FABULOUS.

Fun, fun card, but it's so uncompetitive these days that I can't even find a spot for it in any of my casual decks. Might work in a deck with Primeval Titan and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, but even then, you could probably scare up a better beater for the mana.
Still would make me smile if I saw it in a reprint though.

A note to Wizards; the mythological precident for Nightmare is actually the Celtic Puca. Pucas, tradtionally speaking, took the form of a horse, rabbit, goblin or even a dog. Nightmare should really be classified as a shapeshifter.

He rides across the nation, The Thoroughbred of Sin. He got the application that you - just - sent - in. It needs evaluation, so let the games begin.

Nightmare isn't overcosted? Explain Korlash, Heir to Blackblade. Its a little more black (but who cares with a card like this) for 2 cmc less and a regenerate ability. Its legendary, yes, but it even has Grandeur so that's not as big a drawback as it could be (in fact, the Grandeur is so strong that it might be a plus).
