I've packed four in my Black/Red deck as a quick burn to start the burn and discard ball rolling. It's slows me down slightly but since my deck has a really low mana curve (all but 3 of my creatures/spells are over 3 mana) it more than makes up for it. By turn 4 I can play just about anything in my deck except for my 2 Flameblast Dragons and my one Sorin Markov.

This is a relatively good card. Too slow for decks designed to use it for mana. I think it is a good utility card in the - Crucible of Worlds / Fastbond / Zuran Orb - Combo. Since you don't need it to actually untap to continually cycle it in and out to kill your opponent.

Playing this in said combo deck actually is the only place where this in NOT "utility", as you called it: Its a friggin wincon there!

Helps with stopping white ascension and powering up black ascension
Strikes me that it's useful to a degree. I include them in my vampire deck, but only to add just a little more damage. Most of the creatures are low casting cost, so I'm not slowed much.

its ribbish surely , apart from in some ridculas land bouncing combo.
coming into play tapped is a big deal and one life is not enough to offset that
The perfect top deck after your opponent has played Worldfire.

While this card is definitely not a 5/5, it has its uses. In R/B burn this fits in perfectly. My deck runs playsets of Lightning Bolt, Lava Spike, Spark Elemental, Hellspark Elemental, and Bump in the Night - normally it takes 6 granted that my opponent uses fetches and shocks since it is a modern deck, but this card reduces that to 5 (gut shot sometimes coming in), but the slowed tempo is replaced by card advantage which makes this playable.
Usefullness aside, killing someone with this is nothing short of perfect ^_^
It's funny how if it dealt 2 damage it's be an auto include in at least two or three midrange decks, but as a 1 damage card it stands out as the worst of the zendi-worldwake land cycle by a sadly large margin.
