A good card, but too situational to main deck. Front Lightning Bolt and sideboard this.

Eye of Ugin is a major flavor-thing in zendikar.

We'll be seeing this card again in Rise of the Eldrazi. I'm excited!

I was about to say the same thing, lol.
I'm hoping for some cool promo of it.

Good sideboard card against blue and white, too expensive to maindeck.

Edit: LokiGodofChaos, this is NOT an Eldrazi card, so it does not get -2 to it's casting cost. Eldrazi spells are (actully, will be, as there are no Eldrazi spells at the moment) ones with 'Eldrazi' in the type line.

Based on the flavor tip-off and the typo on Walking Atlas, I'd say that Eldrazi aren't artifacts but are colorless. Protection from colors is looking pretty intimidated right now.

If this is from Zendikar, who--or what--the frak is in the picture?

I bet there is going to be a guy called Ugin and he has protection from colors or something like that. I'm going to assume the guy's dragon tatoo is Ugin. I bet the blue one in the cycle will cost {1}{U} and is return target creature to it's owner's hand.

Or not.

@A3Kitsune: WotC might issue an errata or correction that wouldmake this an eldrazi type spell

Although if that isn't the case, 2 cloud keys, and this IS a colorless lightning bolt

why isnt this reprinted in RotE?

They didn't reprint it...

Which means another Zendikar set will be realeased!

Right?

I'm mad this did not get reprinted in RoE, this at least gave you a shot of killing Emrakul, the Aeons Torn with a spell, never mind you would need 5 of them to kill it. I'm holding out hope to see Ghostfire in M11 this Summer.

They said it was UGIN'S spell, not an Eldrazi spell. It wasn't reprinted in RoE because Ugin wasn't printed.
So hold onto your hats gentleman

Eye of Ugin does not make this Lightning Bolt because this isn't an eldrazi spell.

Chandra using the Breath of Ugin with Jace and Sarkhan both present is what triggered the collapse of the prison holding the Eldrazi.

Had they printed this I don't think it would have done much to change the Rise of the Eldrazi set. While I would have preferred cards more like this as far as the Eldrazi were concerned, such as having certain spells like Brood Birthing treated as colorless (which would really only change things like Flashfreeze, but still) I don't think it would have a huge bearing on Limited or Constructed.

Not to mention the flavor text on Eye of Ugin says it closes for the Eldrazi to awaken. I'm going to assume that means no more blessing until it opens again - which will likely occur in a return to Zendikar set.

Still, I love the picture on this card. Invisible fire.

Ugin's not likely to be printed.

I wonder why this card didn't get reprinted even though it was featured on Zendikar in the storyline. I mean, Chandra used it to beat down Sarkhan and accidentally set off a chain of events that released the Eldrazi. I would think that it's an important card to reprint. Maybe wotc thought Staggershock would be better gameplay-wise... and maybe they're right... but still!! >_>

Really, really interesting and cool, but not usually sufficiently more powerful than Lightning Bolt or Volcanic Hammer to see play before them for me.

Why wasn't this reprinted in Rise of the Eldrazi?

The answer is simple: Rise of the Eldrazi wasn't very connected to the first 2 extensions. They were intended as a prelude leading up to RoTE, but ended up being better than the last extension. I hope that clears up your question.

I can't help but think that at two mana, this card would have been solid; better than Incinerate. Sure, regenerating creatures can be a problem for red, but they aren't as completely untouchable for the color as creatures with protection from it.

Perhaps they stuck it at three mana to keep x8 Incinerate.dec from running rampant in standard. It's a shame though, as while you can tack on all the bells and whistles to a spell that deals the same fixed damage as it's mana cost (Carbonize, anyone?), it needs to be multi-targeted to be worthwhile.

I actually think the designers wimped out and did not take the final step... They should have made the card cost 3 (so the "Ghostfire is colorless." would have probably become "(Ghostfire is colorless.)") and made it 1/180 in the set - like the Eldrazi or Karn Liberated.

Then it truly would have been revolutionary... And quite a bit more powerful too.

Hay guise I herd about these new Eldrazi that are being printed from Eye of Ugin I think they'll look like this:
Eldrazi Rigger
3WhiteBlueBlack
Eldrazi Creature: Rigger Brushwagg Uncle Istvan
Eldrazi Rigger is colorless.
Tap: Assemble target contraption.

Oh and I think 11th Edition will bring back Homarids

EDIT: In case it wasn't clear I posted this during ISD block...

If Eldrazi were artifacts I think the cards would have artifact on them... Also none of the Eldrazi with protection are small enough for one of these to kill them. I still think that four of these for one creature would be card advantage to your opponent.

1Red for 3 damage already feels like your overpaying. 2Red just to make it colorless? Not even in my sideboard.

Shoot, you just need to cast this 5 times in a turn with Reverberates or whatever, and you can take down Emrakul!

So, what will a colourless colour indicator look like?

★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (1 vote)
This card is very narrow, and shouldn't really be used in any constructed deck. In modern, we have access to Lightning Bolt, and this costs 2 more. It even costs 1 more than Searing Spear.

The protection from red won't come up all that often in practice, as most decks out there don't run protection from red in the main deck, and since mono red is not a strong deck in many formats, protection from red is often not even worth a sideboard slot, so a card that gets past protection red is not even needed these days.

Of course, when the narrow application comes up, the card can be very good, which is often what narrow cards are like. It's good a small % of the time, and it's bad every other time. Unfortunately, this is one of those cards.
