My only question is why this card even got made... and also why it got remade. Doesnt seem very useful in any situation i could come up with. And why a rare???

There are some uses for this card- combos with protection and landwalk spring to mind- but they're still a little weak.

This card is better than slight of mind for the same cost and lets you make landwalkers you control unblockable as well as leting you change protection effects on the fly and many other uses. I think this card is way underated.

Anyone who doesn't see the potential in this card is clearly not looking at a whole lot of Magic cards, lol. There are TONS of possibilities with this guy. Pull up virtually any "screw this color" card and go to work.

Lifeforce
Deathgrip

The amazing thing about this card is that it can be used defensively. Playing a blue deck against a mono-white that has Crusade out on the table? No problem, all of your creatures are now at +1/+1 Then he can waste a disenchant on his own spell, hahaha.

Might as well be auto-win with Drought. Against black players, change "swamp" to any other land type they don't run. Against non-black players, change "black" to their mana symbol and watch them weep as they find themselves unable to sacrifice swamps to cast their non-black spells.

There's a small percentage of decks this combo won't completely ruin. Things that splash black. And Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. And 5-CC/Domain decks that run lots of basic lands. But even then you can fix the problem with a second Mind Bend.

I built my wife a deck that has this, Deepchannel Mentor, and Day of the Dragons. Either play Mind Bend on Day (instead of X 5/5 red dragons, you have X 5/5 blue dragons), then play Mentor, or play Day, then Mentor, and Mind Bend on Mentor (instead of blue creatures you control being unblockable, it's red creatures that are).

I also threw in a Hivestone, with a couple Winged and Shifting Slivers. Absolutely a casual play deck, but hell, she's just learning. LOL.

powerdude: That doesn't work. You have to choose one of the 5 colors defined in Magic.

GhelmaroftheSimic: This card doesn't work against Boil because Mind Bend only targets permanents. Try Magical Hack instead.

Use with Northern Paladin.

This is definitely a cute mechanic, I do like the idea of using Floodgate to drown the board in a sea of forests while I hide behind the Elephant Grass.
It's a pity Wizards never printed a Magical Hack type effect for permanent type words and/or creature abilities.

Whim of Volrath is strictly better.

darkfury, powerdude: This won't work on Iona, shield of emeria as there are no color/land words on that card, for Mind Bend to change.

@ wataame: Whim of Volrath is EOT with a buyback cost of 2, and this is an indefinite effect. Neither is strictly better.

Ran this in a mono-blue deck to combo with Chill, Douse and the like. I had it in my hand once when my opponent played Boil against me. That sorta backfired on him.

EDIT: Aw dang, I never noticed that before. I was familiar with Magical Hack and Sleight of Mind, so...well, you know what they say about assuming. Thanks for pointing that out, I feel stupid now.

Could you change a printed mana cost upkeep with this?

Yet another card that is easy to break, and almost always sucks if you dont. I never quite understood why wizards makes cards that are obviously sucky or obviously overpowered, forget both!

Can someone please answer me a SERIOUS question!? If you use mind bend to change the text of a land card from one to another, say a mountain to an island, does that change what mana that land produces from a red to a blue? I would think that since mind bend says "change the 'text'" rather than "change the 'card'" or something like that, that it doesn't. So at this point, would you just have a mountain that's named "island", or IS IT now actually an island???

@Name_Lable47

If a land has a type, that defines what mana it can produce. Example: look at any of the Ravnica Dual lands. They aren't basic lands but have land types. The "add X or Y to your mana pool" only appears as reminder text to tell you what they produce. Another example would be Murmuring Bosk, which is a forest, but with some extra abilities.

If you have a question like this, usually it's a good idea to read the rulings of the card first. Often your question will be addressed (as it is with this card).

Hilarious card. I also love the artwork.

Once chose "Island" when my buddy had Koth of the Hammer in play. He was ***ed.

In Magic, the lack of a color (colorless) is not a valid option when color choices come up. Just like how "Protection from all colors" will not stop artifact sources. It's kind of like choosing 'clear' as your favorite color, it doesn't make much sense.

@Name_Lable47
You need only to check the rulings on the first page:
10/4/2004 It can be used to change a land's type from one basic land type to another. For example, a Forest can be changed to an Island so it produces blue mana.

But! It will still be NAMED Forest (or in your example, Mountain):
10/4/2004 You can't change proper nouns (i.e. card names) such as "Island Fish Jasconius".

Could it be used to make a card that says "Draw a card" to "Draw target card"? If so, would you keep drawing cards into your hand until you got desired card, or would you merely search your library for the card?

I know what the effect does, but there's so many possibilities you can do with even a single word change.

Don't forget, you can change the border color of cards to silver. Keep this in mind if you play Un set cards.

Suddenly Lifeforce, Deathgrip, Lifetap, Living Lands and so forth get a bit more playability. Huh, I wonder if anyone would combo this with Isochron Scepter?

Could I use this to change the upkeep cost on glacial, plating to be regular red mana or change braid of fire mana from red to snow?
adrian.malacoda
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@Jedibryan: Snow isn't a color. You can't use this to change a color word to snow or vice versa.

Turns Teysa, Orzhov Scion into a creature-exiling machinegun.
More importantly, though, you can use this to change the types of lands into different types, allowing you to produce different colors of mana or to ruin the early play of an opponant by changing her swamp into a plains. Much more versatile than it initially appears.

Say I was using Snow-Covered Island in my deck, and my opponent used extraplanar lens on his Snow-Covered Swamp, could I instant this in, and change the text on his card to Snow covered 'ISLAND' instead of 'SWAMP' therefore doubling my mana after that?
