Never realized how much this could be milked on planeswalkers.

The potential of this card is limitless. It can add/subtract ANY counter from ANY permanent, and it can be exploited in a number of ways. Some examples would be the Myojins of Kamigawa. Just give them another counter and they'll be indestructible AND you can use their ability. If you want more counters on Mycoloth, go right ahead. Planeswalkers? These can keep them in check by removing counters (or adding counters if they're yours). 5/5

With this, you could potentially lock down an opponent completely with Decree of Silence in play.

@Shoalsuser2004
Just add Isochron Scepter to that combo. However It would cost alot of mana to play that combo.

Isochron + Silence works the best for lockdown

The potential for this card just got better with the introduction of Quests in Zendikar.

Can be used as a kill-spell against most Arcbound creatures...remove token, they eat it.

Get yourselves a couple of memory crystal and this card owns.

I always thought this would be fun with goblin bomb. Seems more effective than flipping cons all day. Of course you would have to win at least one flip first.

cheap, and awesome with buyback- no reason this shouldnt get a perfect 5, for effect, yet if only out of shear versatility.

Djinn of wishes is a fruitful example :)

@ A3Kitsune, this card does not combo with Doubling Season, any more than any other card that has the word "add counters" or "put token into play derp". I know, you love telling everyone that overpowered card is overpowered, but trust us, we get it.

I absolutely love this card though. I wish it's buyback was 1 less though; with Proliferate running around, the best use one can get out of this card is removing a counter before it can be proliferated out-of-control.

Is this the only card that specifically "targets" counters?

*That's target in the commonsense sense and not the magic terminology sense.
Counters as in abstract units used to for a variety of purposes on a variety of cards.

It's like a very precise, single target proliferate, but it has the option to remove the counter and you can buy it back? I like it.

Early proliferate? It has plenty of differences - you can remove a counter, it can target suspended cards, and it's only one. Has many of the same uses as proliferate, though.

Jace in play, activate Brainstorm, play this. you just brainstormed for +1 instead of for 0.
true, there might be better things you can do with this. and there might be better proliferate cards than this. but Brainstorming for +1 just seems fun, so I like it :)
btw Wizards? this is an INSANELY good card to reintroduce because of all the interactions with Planeswalkers, both positive and negative. splashed easily, and it has buyback FTW?
you should really consider repeating this effect, giving it Tezz art, and renaming it 'clockworking' in a future set.

This is seriously one of the most over powered common cards I've seen. People here try to say it's so limited because of the buyback, two Memory Crystals and the buyback is free. Plus with the thousands of cards in Magic (unless you're using rules restricting to certain sets/blocks), the possibilities are endless.

I run this in a control deck set to lock down an opponent's non-blue/artifact deck, Quicksilver Fountain turns lands into Islands, Clockspinning can prevent the final part of the Fountain's ability and keep all lands islands.

While it may not use counters, Paradise Plume can get you loaded up on HP with each cast, and with free buyback it's more HP. Also goes well with Clearwater Goblet for even more HP.

It can also go good with cards like Armageddon Clock, Time Bomb, or anything else to deal worldwide damage and keep creatures under control. Decree of Silence was mentioned already, which is another great use.

Seriously, the possibilities are limitless with this one in a deck full of counters, especially with Memory Crystal.

Nowadays we'd be lucky to get this at all, let alone at common. Probably'd be a rare at best.

Urgh, I can't believe I thought that was funny :/

ANYway: Clockspinning is highly versatile and fits into a number of combo decks. Even without interactions on your side, it's a solid choice for sideboard as a tool to keep pesky planeswalkers and some other things out of trouble. Also VERY handy to have on hand with a Chronozoa.

Use on Garruk Relentless to transform him immediately, and then still be able to use one of his Veil-cursed abilities.

Anyone possibly imagining using this for some Heroic shenanigans in a janky W/U deck? All the good white creatures with Heroic accrue +1/+1 counters and this repeats for cheap.

I love this card. It does so much for such a nice cost.
All the interactions have already been mentioned, but I have so much fun messing with opponent's permanents in EDH with this. You can't proliferate a counter that isn't there, it makes getting rid of 'walkers that much easier...
I'll never forget a game where I neutered an infinite combo by unsuspending an Ashen Rider in response in a five-color EDH deck.

Or removing a phylactery counter from a player's darksteel forge, or even just using it to boost up mana rocks. It does so much work it's not funny, not even counting buyback.
Always going to be a 4.5 star card for me.
