Vines of Vastwood is generally better now.

It's fun because it's a green counterspell in a modern set. Even if it's not always practical, there's nothing quite like countering spells when nobody expects you to.

I love Foglio art.

vines of vastwood is better because you can conter a spell opponent plays on his/her creatures

Vines of Vastwood won't protect non-creatures such as Cloudstone Curio.

It doesn't nail Sorceries. Which means it's totally useless against Hammer of Bogardan.

I could see this being reprinted in Innistrad block. It would fit, flavour-wise.

Dodged it! The card. Advantage over things like Vines of Vastwood is the ability to defend noncreature permanents...lands and planeswalkers, in particular. In addition, it completely counters something like a Comet Storm aimed at multiple targets, whereas hexproofing one just prevents that one from getting smacked.

Gotta love the showboating art on this. Glad they kept the original art for the new frame. :)

@Killer Nacho: What do you mean "now"? This was printed WAY back in Legends. Thing was, back in those old days, it couldn't shut down just any instant. In fact, only auras and interrupts were fair game. Which meant that the only non-auras it could interdict were the Purelace cycle, Magical Hack, Sleight of Mind, and....I think that's it. (The Heaven's Gate cycle were instants.) Thus, when interrupts were folded into instants, this card got MUCH more useful.

I can't help but wonder if it made an immense impact in TS, considering heirs to it like Vines of Vastwood and Ranger's Guile have been cropping up recently.

"Yeah, we're gonna have to bolt that elf."
"Yeah, you're gonna not be doing that."

Whoops! I bet you wish your Hero's Downfalls were Dreadbores now!

Holy cow, what an amazing card. I didn't know Green had access to counterspells like this in Modern.

And the art is perfect Phil Foglio, sarcastic and silly with bold composition.

SilentOppressor, if you want to counter Lightning Bolt, Giant Growth is a much better pick than this card.
