This in no way stacks up with Serra's Sanctum, Tolarian Academy or Gaea's Cradle.... such a shame, could have been a really cool cycle of lands, but it is true that any red land adding more than one mana would have been quite the game-ender throughout magic. But this just sucks.

that and since red is about playings instants and sorcerys what would the card read? add one R for each instant and sorcery in play? well since instants and sorcerys never actually enter play then i guess that wouldnt work. i suppose it could say add one R for each instant and sorcery youve played this turn. or maybe add one R for each instant and sorcery in your hand but since youd then have to reveal your hand that would kind of ruin the surprise for your opponent.

"Add R to your mana pool for each sorcery in your graveyard" could have been this card. Or just something better than 1 damage to your opponents for 3 mana. If it were R, t: 2 damage to target creature or player, then I could see it getting used.

Uncounterable, repeatable, colorless damage?
That's pretty darn good.

Sure it's absolute drek compared to Tolarian Academy, Gaea's Cradle, and Serra's Sanctum, but those cards are an abomination of common sense, restraint, and fairness.

I belive the one damage should have been for free. Compare it to Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle. That would make this card alot more playable.

Use when playing the Archenemy, and it'll only take you...what, 20 turns to win? Plus 1 for each point of lifegain?

Shivan Gorge
n. (Shih-vun GORJ)
1. A land from Urza's Saga that could produce colourless mana or deal damage to all opponents for three mana.
2. The wound, or "gorge," left by injury from a shiv.

Works well with Thran Turbine & Braid of Fire, especially so since it's Legendary. Not great not but not awful.

This is a great card when your opponent has lots of blockers out. Can't get through their defense? No problem! Plus, enough of this kills Emrakul. COLORLESS DAMAGE!!!!!!!!

a slightly cheaper rod of ruin

@Lemak: You answered your own question: Each instant and sorcery you've played this turn would work. Excepting Storm combos, it wouldn't be as degenerate compared to the others. Or add {R} for each point of damage done to an opponent this turn.

@Land_comment- First of all, there are many less expensive ways to get around blockers. Kill them, use evasion, use direct damage... wasting 4 lands a turn (remember you have to tap this too, making it essentially cost 4 mana) to do ONE point of damage is nowhere near cost-efficient, by anyone standards. Remember, it costs that much to draw a card, and most players, in most situations, would rather have one more card from their deck than do 1 extra point of damage (see Ophidian).
Second, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn only has protection from colored spells, not colored permanents, so the damage being colorless doesn't matter for emrakul. You could kill Emrakul with 15 Prodigal Sorcerers, even though Tim is blue, because Tim is a permanent. Besides, it's legendary, so you can only have one out at a time, so you would have to pay 45 mana and untap this 15 times to kill emrakul. If this card could even target creatures. Which it can't.

Tamanoa, Furnace of Wrath and Quest for Pure Flame could all slightly help this card :)

Consider that this is a land capable of dealing damage to multiple enemy players and there are few lands which can do this. Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle requires you to have 5 mountains down AND drop a land card for it to activate, making it much harder to activate. Shivan Gorge, however, works more often and has great synergy with Chandra's Spitfire.

See also Keldon Megaliths for similar usage (cheap and great if you're out of cards).

Spend twelve mana over three turns or play a mountain to deal 3 damage? The choice is yours!

Seriously, though, this card is a joke compared to Valakut. Not useless, but I'd much rather have the ability to target creatures than dealing damage to all players, and you might not get to activate Valakut every turn, but you only have to activate it once every three turns and it still comes out ahead of this card.

A little slow in one on one and it'll make you the enemy in multiplayer. Still it's a land that does damage 3.5/5

Comparing with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle is not fair regarding difference in time and block in which those 2 lands were printed. However even if you insist on comparing, althought most of time, Valakut is better, there are also situations where Shivan Gorge is better. Consider multiplayer combo with Chandra's Spitfire. Lets say playing 3 vs 3 multiplayer, it gives 3 damage total to opponents and boosts Spitfire with +9. Valakut can not do it.

T: Add R to your mana pool for each point of damage dealt this turn.

There is your 'stupid, broken... how much mana is = ?! that's I don't even... why did they make this card?!' effect for Urza Block, Red Style :)

Or, you know, just pick this as your General and give the table a Trollface when you knock everyone out with uncounterable General Damage 20 turns later. ^_^ Problem?

(it's a land, not a creature, blah blah rules blah can't be General blah. Commander is supposed to be fun. Do something silly :)

Here's what my version of this would have been to match the epicness of Gaea's Cradle Tolarian Academy and Serra's Sanctum, "{T}: Shivan Gorge does 1 damage to target creature or player for each mountain you control."

And that's it, it doesn't produce mana at all. Now THAT would match the epic craziness of the other 3 cards while still capturing the essence of red, Phyrexian Tower is ok, but NOWHERE near the best 3.

Uncounterable, repeatable, colorless, non-target damages, that doesn't even cost you a card. You seriously are understimating this card... The only drawback is that it doesn't give you {R}, but only {1}... I would like it a lot better!

Other cards that do something similar are more expensive and, to be honest, quite different:
Orzhova, the Church of Deals
Keldon Necropolis
Keldon Megaliths
Stensia Bloodhall
Valakut is for combo decks, this is more general-porpouse, so I like much more.

Also, I like this art better than the new one...

4.5/5

@ DarthParallax: I really like your version. In order to use it properly you have to do something before in the same turn, since it can't trace previous damages... So it reflect the "act now" philosophy of red! And a simple Pyroclasm can give you a lot of Red, reaching the brokeness of the other land of this cycle. A non-broken land with the same feeling may be, I think, this one:

"Tap: Add Red to your mana pool for each damage dealt to your opponents this turn."

This isnt so great when you compare it to its other 4 cycle members... but that doesn't mean its awful.

enables the casting of Rakdos *RTR one*, give you a mana sink, damages ALL opponents in a FFA game, and even in 1v1 gives your burn deck something to do when you inevitably run out of cards

dDon't look at this in a vacuum, look at this with other spells of its color, its an uncounterable *Still stifle-able* burn spell that deals 1 damage and never goes a way.

Sigh... people... if you hate this card because the ability is weak, you are missing the point! Being able to do 1 damage when you have nothing better to do is great. Not to mention, if you are using Chandra's Spitfire in multiplayer, this is way more powerful than Valakut.
