In a demon deck, this is amazing. Control magic for 3 mana? GIMME!

Enchanting a Demon or just having a changeling makes this quite useful.

i think it's currently underrated. sure, there might be only a very narrow constructed use given that there aren't that much oni (aside from Changelings or alternatives like Image Crafter) - but if you can make use of it, it's a pretty cheap (and black) Control Magic, or even cheaper when compared to the newer even more costy version Mind Control.

this is the demon deck's answer to baneslayer angel,
me: your bane slayer is pro all my creature? opponent: yes it is, it can block them all day with its lifelink, first strike and flying me: I see, *cast Mark of the Oni on Baneslayer* opponent: ouch

why the bad rating?

At worst its Black Threaten. At best its Black Mind Control for 3 CMC.
Demons could seriously use more tribal effects. Seriously, if giants were a tribe in Lorwyn then cost can't be a huge issue and I don't think anybody would mind if we had a couple extra demons in the next set or if they were cheaper than normal (heck let them keep the drawbacks if it lets me play cards like this).

this would be mean if you stole a demon with it.

The problem with this card is that Abyssal Persecutor is the lowest coast playable demon and I am not even sure he works in demon decks despite its 3 mana coast it is still kind of a late game card 2/5.

If Divine vs. Demonic had been made properly, this card would've been included...

Everyone (save for a few) is focusing solely on the one sentence of this card. This can simply be used as a color shifted Threaten/Act of Treason (minus the untap/haste). And how do we break those cards? Sacrifice effects! And has SO MANY more of those than . The Demon line is actually a benefit, not a downside. I read this card as:
Mark of the Oni Sorcery Gain control of target creature until end of turn. If you control a Demon, gain control of target creature for as long as you control a Demon instead.
Of course, there are some technial differences, but you get my point. I don't like defending many of Kamigawa's cards, but they did pretty good on this one.

I just had my arse handed to me by this card, someone had a casual demon tribal deck and the cornerstone were many of the 4 mana demons such as Grinning Demon, Abyssal Persecutor and Scourge of Numai. Also had removals and sacrifice cards like Geth's Verdict
Had a hard time dealing with those demons as they have quite high toughness and are already black which means a majority of removal spells don't work. Using this card I had most of my blockers taken away for a cheap cost and control the board
I like this card. Why? It's really unfortunate how under supported Demons are, and they deserve cards like this as a tribe. And while Demons are currently somewhat viable, I hope one day they will be a force to be reckoned with. Rather than just cool finishers.
3/5, for the potential that this card has when better demons are printed. It might be awhile, but I think Demon decks of the future might have good use for this.

3/5 I can someday see an Unglued card being name Mark of the Oni-chan, LOL but that is the Otaku part of me. Creature steal in Black is great along with the prerequisite makes it less reliable than Blue. Add to that, that demons isn't a very common creature type (oustide of Kamigawa) then this card is usually used to remove a potential blocker, not bad for 3 mana.
The fact that this can permanently steal Demons seems kind of silly.

Should've swapped effects with Oni Possession.

Even if you do lose control of it at the end step, this can still be a nasty surprise for any opponent who thinks they may have the upper hand, especially in EDH. Who'd expect this sort of thing from BLACK????

Fling it if you want to get rid of it for good =)
Good times for my Demon deck.
Add in the ability to make it permanent with a Demon, and BAM. That's crazy effective.
