Rated 5 not only for nostalgia, but this is one of the best creatures in my Suicide Black deck... that is until I have to side them out for Masticore lol.

Should this be “you may”?

Why the hell would it be "you may"? That's the downside. A 5/5 for 2B with trample is only balanced with the awful downside. edit: okay I guess I didn't get the rather obscure reference that is five and a half years old
Very strong if you can work around it.

As Etregan put it, 1st turn swamp + dark ritual + phyrexian negator = good game. At least it used to be that way.

This guy would be amazing to drop in 1st turn with a Dark Ritual.
Hopefully your opponent doesn't start the game by Shocking him though.

The Negator would have been stupidly powerful if not for the enormous downside. Sure, you can cast it on your first turn, but as Etregan points out, a simple Shock (which would now be a Lightning Bolt) would make many players scoop up their cards unless they have a really sicko deck (hmm, how about a casual deck with 4 Unearths, 4 Dark Rituals, 4 Negators and 4

Like the old artwork better. Gives me a chill of an alien and terminator coming to smash in.

I do think this is good against non burn cards. Also in the reprint set it comes in you get "Living Death". So I think after this card becomes useless or if this card has caused you to put a lot of good creatures in the graveyard you can cast living death and put all creatures put in the graveyard by it back in play and get rid of this card too. Great card as you play all your dead creatures at once which Phyrexian Negator has put in the graveyard for you without paying their mana cost.

This card and the Tempest edition Counterspell have the best flavor text. Their simple, amusing, and do a good job a conveying the card's ability and name.
Also, the original art on this version is much better than the new one.

Such a sweet card, black suicide/beatdown is awesome. I wish I had the skillz to use the card to it's greatest potential. On second thought, how much skill does it take to get this out first turn with dark ritual?

I think this is one the best creature cards ever printed: tier 1 among black creatures. It's a 3 costing 5/5 with Trample. You don't play this card in casual games where everyone's got a phew bolts up their sleeve, but on tournaments where you expect heavy control reigning. Of course the obvious downside to this card is that you have to keep 4 creatures in your sideboard. Or at least you have to think of a sideboard card that fills the demanding slot.
If they were to print this guy today, he'd be a mythic rare and make your opponent sacrifice the permanents...
Oh wait...
(By the way, I'm not referencing the duel deck reprinting.)

This art is great. It harkens back to 90's sci fi and I love it. As for it's pragmatic function, this card was not made simply to kick ass on its own. It was built as something to build around in order to best facilitate its strengths, and avoid its weaknessess. Just don't use 'em against red.

yeah. Development killed it. they were concerned it was possibly dangerous for the Standard metagame. and the Vintage one too. they gave us this alternate suggestion for something called 'Phyrexian Obliterator'

After reading all the comments, i'm going to assume that some of you have not been playing him in the right deck. I run him in a black/white deck that also includes: Vindicate, Diabolic edict,Swords to Plowshares and the very powerful (if not super unfair) Balance . the Negator is powerful you just have to give him the right support and play on his weakness. I feed mine Phyrexian Walker's he just loves the crunch and if you get tired of the pain just Culling The Weak him to somthing like Desolation Angel
(yeah burn decks can cause problems,Just use somthing likeShelter to keep him safe.)

Phyrexian Negator vs Phyrexian obliterator: both die, but you sacrifice 10 permanents.

Apparently, lore-wise, these were designed specifically to kill planeswalkers. As it stands they seem to have done an exceedingly good job of this.

This one's art is amazing.
Can I note (as I probably did on the other version) that this is {2}{B} so saying it's 1 CMC to get the Obliterator is over-zealous. It's {B}{B}{B} more expensive. While this card is most often used in pure black decks, the fact that you can run it in a {R}{B} deck or find all sorts of other abusable situations for him is why he's still good.
T1 Swamp, Dark Rit T2 Mountain, Boom (kill the swamp) T2 Mountain, Raze, Crack the Earth
You still have zero-permanents. They probably still have zero permanents. I guess one of his flaws is that he can die to Shower of Sparks..
He's quite similar in a lot of ways to Avatar of Discord in how you have to pin your opponent to the wall, Sorin's Vengeance style, by taking away everything they love at the cost of *so much*
I'm going to be trying to run him in an Ichorid deck of sorts. I'll also be trying Treacherous Link
But.. do it well and you have a nigh unbeatable deck :D

Protect it with duress, terror any blockers in your way, sacrifice it as a last resort.
This card made you think how to wield its power. Obliterator is just, "HUR DUR, I PLAY BLACK, I PUT DEM IN BOSS"
