W...w...what? It's pretty much worse than a 1/1 unless they have no creatures. Hell, it's as good as a 0/1, because you can't do damage if they can block it. You'd need to get a bunch down quickly to make any impact.

this was good in goblin/sligh decks against control or any deck packing few creatures. The red deck burns through whatever they have and voila! Two damage per turn.

I think the rating is a bit low, although i admit that it won't help you much if your opponent has any creatures.
(Also there are better one-drop goblins with an attack power of 2, like Tattermunge Maniac, Goblin Guide or even Mogg Cons.cripts/Goblin Cohort)

But this provides some fun with Sheltering Ancient.
...downside is that it requires your opponent to attack or block with a creature.

This was actually played in Red Deck Wins for quite some time, and it was a good creature. It was unlikely you'd do much attacking with a 2/1 when they had blockers anyway, and that's what burn is for.

Probably one of the most underrated cards there are.

Upon blocking, he is removed from combat - the creature you threw him at is considered blocked and no damage resolves;

let that seep in for a second and think.

Yep.
This breaks trample. And deathtouch. And lifelink. And adds no counters to Umezawa's Jitte.
Buys you at least one round against any deck trying to win with a single fat pusher.
Heck, I once stalled down a Sneak Attack'd Blightsteel Colossus with one of these guys.

Now, if you add Homeward Path your one-mana niche attacker suddenly becomes a rock in the tides too, easily capable of indefinitely halting a rampant Batterskull, Wurmcoil Engine, you name it.
Red doesn't exactly have many cards like these.

That is to say, a one-mana critter with power greater than one isn't even half bad by itself, doubly so as red tends to offer more than enough ways of cleaning the field of potential blockers anyway.

What else is there to say?
Oh, they're also goblins, and hence blending in well with any of the various tribal mechanics based on that.

So.
2 stars?
Pff.
