What an awesome spin on Flametongue Kavu.

Pretty close to Hellrider in the win-now department. Makes instantaneous board wipes via Quicken quite viable.

This guy is insane. Who needs Hellrider anymore? In aggro mirror, this thing deals 5-8 damage outright, winning any race unless they got one down first.

I am assuming Mogis will be the red and black God. Because of this and Mogis's Marauder.

This guy was nuts at the pre-release for me combined with Gift of Immortality. Won all of my games when I got to play both.

If this card was a common.. but it's not. I'm always excited to pull this in Limited even if it only ends up doing two-three damage simply because you just can't beat four mana for a nice body with a Lava Bolt stapled to it. It isn't a Flametongue Kavu in that it won't remove that pesky creature, but it will get rid of a Planeswalker, which is probably even better.

I don't see why people compare this to Flametongue Kavu. Aside from the same mana cost and stats, the purposes they serve are quite different. FTK is a busted creature removal + creature spell. This is a giant punch to the face. Both cards are quite good, but not really direct parallels of each other.

What a fantastic replacement for Hellrider for Standard. I'm so happy I can keep playing my favorite color without leaving that niche unoccupied.

Looking forward to building a red devo deck with this guy, obviously. I'm thinking Legion's Initiative will be a nice at-will flicker.

Jeez, most of the good minotaurs are red anyways, and even if you arn't running a minotaur tribal this could hit the field for a huge amount of damage.

In response to various comments:
-Hellrider is still good if you run tokens or otherwise non-devotion red
-This looks like Flametongue, but they serve entirely different purposes. One is card advantage/tempo advantage, one is more "Finisher-y" and pure tempo. Also, Ftk likes to be splashed for, this guy much less so.

The card? I think it's interesting enough to consider in some odd decks, possibly even in legacy. One could imagine a Lumberjack into BTE, this guy for 7 power on the board and 4 to the face; and that's no god hand, that's just a reasonable play.

What's interesting about Devotion cards is they make them color light so you have to build around them; which ironically makes them splashable but really only "good" in mono color (or possibly dual color decks.)

The ravnican double mana creatures however are super broken with these guys; with mana symbols as a balancing factor and easily usable in dual colors.

I can't believe Grey Merchant is a common if Fanatic is uncommon.

This card is amazing and has saved me loads of times whenever I've fallen behind. This is good as a tempo regainer, especially late game when each opponent loses, like 8 life. I currently run four of these in a minotaur tribal deck I'm building. Decent 4/2 body as well. 4/5 for the double up as a burn spell.

This card is great in Rakdos or Gruul, but obviously better in mono red

I don't know...To me, it seems that the people making these cards switched up the names for this and Mogis's Marauder. I mean, the human looks kinda like a fanatic and this guy looks a lot more like a marauder to me...just saying...just saying

This card has won me more games than I can even remember. I run 4 in R/B minotaur tribal and 2 in red aggro and I have yet to be disappointed in topdecking one.

A control deck's worst nightmare. Imagine this scenario:

T1: Rakdos Cackler/Firedrinker Satyr
T2: Rakdos Shread Freak, swing for 4, opponent is at 16 life
T3: Minotaur Skullcleaver, swing for 8, opponent is at 8 life
T4: Fanatic of Mogis does 5 damage, ,opponent is down to 3 then swing for 6 and end the game.

Ok I'm still relatively new to magic but if I summoned him then casted Tainted Strike on it, would the damage from it's enter the battlefield effect be poison counters?

@jmilzy -- yes, actually. as long as you were able to cast the Tap targeting the Fanatic right after his triggered ETB ability goes on the stack. Then, cast Tainted Strike. It will resolve, giving the Fanatic +1/+0 and Infect.... THEN his ETB ability will resolve, counting your devotion to Red for the amount of damage. So, it would be quite possible to immediately kill with that combo.

The main problems with it, are that if you're that heavily mono-Red, it's probably best for consistency to just stay in-color. And, Red Infect really isn't a thing, so if you didn't get the kill in then, those Poison counters are mostly going to be useless and the damage would be better. There IS some good Black Infect, but you'd want lots of Red signs on the board to maximize the Fanatic's damage.

So, in a casual setting it could be a ruthless combo (and maybe there's an EDH application for this)... but I'm not sure I'd recommend trying it anywhere else.

If you can turn this into some ruthless Modern turn 4 kill though, more power to you! :)
