Haha! My salamander tribal deck continues to grow! That conditional -4/-4 might be just worth the trade-off of losing two very relevant creature types.

Pros:
- It's a salamander! Yay!
- -4/-4 is really cool, and even the normal -1/-1 is good.

Cons:
- Not a Goblin or a Zombie.
- -4/-4 is conditional; not much of a con with the -1/-1 backing it up.

I really like this three-card combo with Festering Newt, Bubbling Cauldron, and Bogbrew Witch. Top-down design like that is one of my favorite things in Magic.

This guy is so much win. In terms of flavor and power.

I love functional reprints of decent cards and its flavors will etch it memories of all magic players (sort of)

Flash in Bogbrew Witch with Savage Summoning in response to them killing this.

Absolutely devastating with Bubbling Cauldron, whether you control the witch or not.

What a great name. Sounds like an angry little bugger.

A one-drop that trades with a two-toughness creature is not terrible.

The synergy with Bog Brew Witch and Bubbling Cauldron is gravy.

Would be good if it wasn't "target creature an opponent controls". Then if there were no opposing creatures around (and you chucked it into the cauldron to drain some life from your opponents), the witch would have to fall victim to her own wicked brew.

I sometimes wonder just how great an impact Modern Masters and M14 had on each other's development. Was Festering Goblin reprinted there to help people appreciate the -1/-1 aspect of this? Or to emphasise Tribal revelance? Or to remind people how appropriately powerful such effects could be (rather than ramble on about how they preferred Fume Spitter)?

Either way, I would like to see something like Modern Masters happen more often, just to get people thinking. This card is excellent, people just need to start realising that.

I don't want to buy packs of this set. I really do not.
BUT! I do want to play Limited, because I really want to use these cards x3

Heart of the Cards, Potter-style!

"Eye of rabbit, harpstring hum,
turn this water, into rum!"
- what I say before topdecking a Cauldron.

"Sunshine daisies, butter mellow,
turn this stupid fat rat Yellow!"
- what I say before topdecking a Witch

"Nunquam Draco Dormiens Titillandus!"- what I say before topdecking a Newt

Honestly, I would just keep saying these over and over again even if I never got this deck to work and didn't pull a Witch. :3

Yeah, Harry Potter copied the "Double Bubble" thing from Shakespeare in movie 3. That's because Shakespeare was good.

I'm copying from Harry Potter for my action lines because Harry Potter was also good. =)

I like that this is NOT a functional reprint of fume spitter. The fume spitter sacs on command and this guy doesn't. He does get the bonus of his synergy friends tho. I think this balances them out and still makes both valuable. I like seeing this in Magic. I hate it when newer cards completely outstripe older cards. They did some good work on this set... mostly .

@Phelplan

They're not saying it's a functional reprint of Fume Spitter...
it's a (almost) functional reprint of Festering Goblin! one of my favorite one-drops of all time

when festering newt dies it deal -1/-1 damage. if i target a creature that has only 1/1, does that creature die?

If you can burn / sac this card on demand you can deal with a Master of Waves

annnnnd wizards just alienated the population of magic players that actually understand that newts and salamanders are not the same thing...

I can't help but wish this had read "if you control a hag" instead. That would have given it more options in the long run.

Of course bogbrew would need to have been a hag in that case, but she should have been anyway. Still, a fun card.

I really want to use this with the cauldron and a Soul Foundry. Is that so wrong?
