This is pretty good removal for green, I think it fits Golgari more than Gruul

@ Leuitrikos Or Simic, as it is flavored.
Kind of disappointed that both this and pit fight got printed in the same block. Almost always, the consistency of pit fight is better, especially considering this as an inconsistent kill spell.

Pretty steep requirement to get Prey Upon at instant speed, especially when you consider that evolve creatures (the best way your are getting early counters) are typically small and would take a LOT of effort to start fighting favorably.
I think I'm going to go and put this into my Protean Hydra deck.

i play this card in my Junk allies deck and believe me, nothing is funnier than watching my opponents' face as i slam this during their end step and just obliterate the creature they thought would last forever.
Me: *sigh* i-uhh...i can't do much, pass. friend: okay, i pay 10 and cast primordial hydra. he's 8/8, pa- me: BEFORE you do that, i cast join the ranks to trigger my field twice* and mutant's prey so my 9/9 blademaster punches your hydra in the dick. :) friend: ..........f*** you.
Obviously Pit fight is easier to use but in the right situations consider how great this spell is: You can cast this on your heroic creature that might be smaller than the creature you want it to fight, but heroic triggers and resolves before this resolves, so you can cast this on a smaller creature to get it the extra two or three counters needed to kill the opponent's creature.

Absolutely. Making this card more viable would have been good for both limited and constructed. They could have made this a cantrip. Or it could have given another +1/+1 counter to your creature, so it's more likely the fight will end up in your favor.

As long as we are going casual, vigean hydropon. 5/5 fighter early game and immediately provides your later creatures the counter they need.

Very fun card, if you've got a deck full of creatures with +1/+1 counters, then you can make great use of this
