Way too unfocused, I think this would have been better if split into two separate creatures. Shows how old the "huge blue creature with ridiculous untap clause" gimmick was getting even at this stage. Still, it's better than Leviathan and that whale is cute ^_^

Artwork is great. He just needed trample to actually be effective.

The card is weak (well, it's from Homelands, what do you expect), but it has one of the most powerful artwork I've ever seen. And it's powerful in a very clever way: first time you look at this, all you see is some really ugly, deep-sea fish eating up a smaller fish for lunch. That's when it hits you: wait, that's no fish, that's a goddamned WHALE! Just how huge is that thing?! Mr Gelon did a truly amazing job here. It certainly has that OMGWTF factor.

While the untap clause is ridiculously stupid, the pinging ability makes this guy look like a bomb in limited. -1 power? That's fine, this guy will still likely kill whatever it blocks. Or, at least, survive. I mean, with just the mana to cast this guy you can use that ability 3 times per turn (enough to kill a good size of a swarm, your worst nightmare with this guy). And he's still a 5/8. Not being able to hit fliers seems bad except your blue...so you should be able to get past that with a Plumeveil or, at the least, a wall of air.
Not tournament viable but few cards are.

I agree with kitsunewarlock
Although it might be tough to attack with, that last ability is nice. to do one damage to any attacking creature without flying, and if I'm not mistaken you can do this as many times as you wish even if the power goes below 0, not great but decent for blue.

There isn't much to say about this card other than it just doesn't work. Just like most of the other Homelands era creatures it's severely overcosted and cumbersome to use.

Gave it trample and make it so it could untap and it would be a soild blue card with AWESOME ART WORK>
This art is good. Still, this guy's a bit weak for a Leviathan.

How on Earth is that guy even remotely a serpent?
I'd still run this in a casual Quest for Ula's temple deck with stormtide leviathan and some Freed from the real or that one blue aura that gives vigilance from planar chaos.
On a completely unrelated note: while browsing on Opera, the browser tells me that stormtide is misspelled. When I right click to see the correct spelling it comes up with: storm tide, storm-tide, stormtroopers, storminess, Stormie, stormily, postmortem, and systematize. o_O

Sac a creature just does not work in . I'm sorry, but it just doesn't.
I can see it in and , it's practically a staple. I can even see it in and , while not very flavorful. All of them can make tokens pretty easily, but mostly (Goblins) and (Saprolings, Elves, Beasts, Wolves...), the opposite side of on the color wheel (See where I'm going with this?). It just doesn't have the spare creatures to pull off a cost like that reliably. And even if you do, it just eats away your card advantage and steers you away from winning.
Yes, there are merfolk, birds, and such but notice how much you have to bend over backwards to make blue token engines work? Don't fall in to the trap of trying to make this card function.

The last ability is cool, and at least it is a huge creature. Since this is Homelands, I'd expect the Leviathan of the set to be a 2/4 with Plainshome or some stupid thing.

Heeeere, whaley, whaley!
While Leviathan is now befitting it's size, it's clearly just a radioactively mutated Godzilla angler fish.
The name sounds like Arabian Nights, by the way.

@Paladin85 "...as blue doesn't get much in terms in creature burn..."
Paladin, I am sory, but blue is original color of "pingers" and it changed only few years ago with "color pie shifting ..."
Let me name a bunch of them, there are more for sure, but it is enough to show that blue is father of "ping" creatures ...
Oh hey, it's a giant viper fish! Yes, these things do really exist, however, they're only a foot long. Actually, their teeth are too long for them to close their jaw without getting stabbed.

Funny how two or three average sized creatures can kill somehting that can swallow a whale whole. Then again that luminescent organ may also contain its vitals, I've never dissected a leviathan.

A whale is just a snack for this guy? I'm sorry, but that's kind of dumb.....
I need to see a lot more than 8/8 with drawbacks in a creature who would empty the world's oceans.

Very limited use, the last ability is the saving grace as blue doesn't get much in terms in creature burn

Name me one creature that is blue and can do more than 1 damage at your choosing, along the lines of a Flametongue Kavu
Notice I never said 'ping'

Do not accuse Homelands for this creature. It's not so much different from Leviathan or Polar Kraken. Big blue creatures just had to have these disadvantages in the early Magic.
@OmegaSerris: Funny you write that when Homelands is just the set that has a blue token producer: Wall of Kelp.
