Not a bad choice of sacrifice outlet, given that you get a 4/4 trampler into the bargain. That's worth something, even if it's no Fallen Angel or Nantuko Husk.

Worst card ever?

The only time this is good is if a player is using a sacrifice combo, otherwise its garbage.

How many black trample creatures are there at 5cc or less? And of those what, 6, how many are more useful then this? 1, maybe 2. Black Carriage isn't a great card, but its in a colour that doesn't get trample without a huge casting cost most of the time and its drawback is one that plays into the colours strengths. It's at worst a decent card that has a certain niche, nowhere near the worst card ever, seeing as its not even the worst card in its colour in its set.

Nice card for a lockdown deck, where people can't untap their permanents (or only very few ones). Since this guy has it's own way to untap it get's around such problems. :)

What the hell? I'd rather play Zombie Goliath which, although pretty damn horrible, is more useful than this...

Wow, back in the days when Wizards though that you had to have a drawback for any big creature :P

Thank you, Grand Creature Type Update, for allowing me to write that WOTC really put the carriage before the horse on this card.

PS: This isn't a horse. It's PULLED by horses. Maybe a Construct?

The really sad irony is that this card is terrible compared to Sengir Vampire, which is funny since Homelands was supposed to focus on the Sengirs, among other groups.

"The Black Carriage is Baron Sengir's favorite way to tour through the Sengirian countryside. When Baron Sengir wishes to ride, he chooses a villager to act as Coachman. When the tour of his lands and properties is complete, the Baron personally unbridles his steeds and lets them consume the terrified peasant as reward for their labor. Careening along the cobbleroads at breakneck steeds, the Baron's chargers have been seen to sweat fire and blood, and that when they gallop their horseshoes throw fiery sparks."

Shouldn't it be a vampire horse?

I guess this was designed to be put into token decks, much like Lord of the Pit , but these days this card would be laughable at best even at common status. Trample ain't all that good on a 4/4, and not being able to untap is -crippling-. There are much better alternatives, and if you absolutely positively MUST have trample on a black creature, just use Unnatural Predation.

Lovely art on this card. What Homelands lacks in power and playability, it certainly more than makes up for in tasteful art and flavour.

This is really not that bad if you have something to spit out tokens, or playing BlackGreen with Instill Energy. Every black trampler has some sort of drawback and this one is pretty easy to work around. 4/4 isn't much, but suddenly Howl From Beyond, Endless Scream find an interesting use. You could do a lot worse as a method to try and get through a line of chump blockers, though you'd likely just as soon get rid of them the old-fashioned way.

At worst, this is one of the most playable Homelands cards, whatever that says for it.

That is a really cool card. No, it's not very playable today, but the art and concept is way better than anything I thought Homelands was capable of.

Oh no. Was Trample really such a scary thing that required a drawback like this?

Kao is pretty right... whatever the crappiness of the rest of the creature is, "sac a creature: untap this" with no mana cost is a pretty good combo enabler. The upkeep restriction may or may not be a real factor depending on what your combo is.

Actually I went to this page after seeing the preview of Grimgrin, Corpse-Born (it'll link somewhere fairly soon) after first being really disappointed in the harsh drawback (maybe it's still good with the auto kill on attack? Not sure, but it's not hopeless) and then realizing that "sac: untap this" could be very abusable. So I did a search for similar clauses and wow, a Homelands card beat you to it. Of course, each fuffils a different niche for combos; the upkeep restriction may or may not matter on certain combos, while the double black vs. blue black also depends on what you're doing. And of course Grimgrin has a built in point to going infinite.

Splinter Twin + Pandemonium.

No one will ever see that coming.

Enchant with Arcane Teachings, because a 6/6 creature with trample is pretty decent, and having a creature-consuming machine gun is pretty cool too.

5 for a 4/4 trample is sub-par for todays standards. + Drawback, this is a poor creature today.

It's interesting to compare this card to Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, since Innistrad was basically an attempt to do a non-sucky version of Homeland's gothic Transylvanian horror motif. I wonder if the similarity between the two cards was deliberate?

Anyway, this card sucks, but it's hard to resist the urge to try and use its odd untap ability in combos.

@Lord_of_Tresserhorn: You can only use his sacrifice ability during the upkeep phase, and it requires 2 enchantments, one of which has to be cast on the creature the turn before you'll be able to use it, and all the cards are expensive, so it's unlikely you'll be able to cast 2 of them in the same turn. I think that's the very definition of "they're gonna see it coming...."
If they can cast 4 power worth of creatures, they'll blow you up for 2 of your cards killed and none of theirs... it's a pretty bad combo, really....
