Thunder Strike but better.

Compare to Hundred-Talon Strike and Guided Strike and we see that you're either getting +1/+2 or drawing a card for that extra {1}. What's your preference, card advantage or more combat tricks?

It's okay, Skillful Lunge, I still love you for all the mileage I got out of you in Limited.
Everything's gonna be all right.

One star for a Limited combat trick--otherwise, filler garbage.

Loves me some combat tricks. Very respectable for the cost. 3/5

Wizards, stop immediately making cards obsolete. I happened to like Skillful Lunge.

"Suck Tree" would also have been acceptable

I'm going to quit my gimmicky usage of the "we" and "us" pronouns for a second.

Skillful Lunge being in THE LAST SET officially proves that wizards is quickly running out of ideas/sanity.

Seriously guys, what the actual *feather*?

Fun fact: when I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh forever again, easily my least favorite thing about it was how most of the common cards were literally 100% worthless compared to rarer ones. You'd have tons of guys with like 1000 attack and defense and no ability, and then the rarer cards are the exact same thing except with 1800 attack or 1800 attack AND a useful effect, while still having 1000 defense of course. (If modern Yu-Gi-Oh has improved in this area or it was never that bad about it in the first place and I just have a biased memory, I apologize)

When first starting out and trying Magic, I seriously considered quitting upon seeing that happened in MTG as well (the case was Yavimaya Wurm compared to Primeval Titan, iirc), but thought better of it and kept playing. I now understand the difference between commons that show up in drafts all the time and big splashy mythic rares that they intentionally pushed for tournament play to see what would happen, and that's fine. I don't have a problem with that. This card right here is inexcusable, though. If you would've shown this card and Skillful Lunge to me when I was considering whether or not I wanted to play magic, then explained that Zealous Strike came out one set later, I can confidently say that I would never have decided to play Magic. Which would be a shame, because I love this game now that I've gotten into it.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I personally believe that this was a terrible decision to print this common one set after Skillful Lunge.

Wait... so, this spell imparts a +2/+2 and first strike from a small sharp stick....

That staff he is holding must give like +6/+6 double strike and lifelink based on that comparsion.

Does 2 toughness really mean anything when you're getting first strike?
I'm not really concerned if wizards thinks a particular combat trick absolutely needs to be accessible in both sets. Does seem a little strange but I could see them just straight up overlooking the fact that it happened, being that it has so little impact on anything relevant. o.o

Silly question, I do not know if it works (I have scoured the rules to see if it is not allowed that is) but what happens if, for example, you target an big enemy creature AFTER first strike combat phase but BEFORE main strike. Does the enemy deal no damage since first strike phase has passed? Is that a legit tactic, if so I have evil evil uses for this.

Ok...I could see a very limited scenario in which Skillful Lunge is better. When playing against someone using Death's Caress, Sever Soul, Weed Strangle or something where toughness matters, this would help them more. Still...
