Why "the first creature"?

Yeah. That is awkward. You would think that with the new aura templating this wouldn't need such an odd phrase.

Takes some people a while to realize it's useful defensively as well as offensively.

VERY defensively.
Basically neuters an opponent's creature, since they won't dare attack you and give you the chance to turn the damage to their own creatures. But unlike white's equivalent, you can put it on your own creatures for super first strike.

Excellent card.

Turns any creature into an instant assassin with firster strike. Laccolith Rig is great for taking out utility creatures and getting past walls. Plus it's a pretty sweet card for multiplayer politics. Block Joe's soldier token to destroy Bob's Fauna Shaman, everybody wins!

As long as I'm understanding the ruling correctly (it can be used to give super first strike to your creatures, or nullify your opponent's attacking creatures), then this is hands down one of the best and most versatile auras red has access to. Goes great with aggressive red weenies and defensive red control.

Really neat card, because of the (flavorly odd) fact that the enchantment and not the creature has the Laccolith trigger, so you can still decide where the damage goes when cast on an opponent's creature.
(Well maybe not necessarily that odd, considering that you are creator of the Rig and have control over it :P)

It can both work for and against aggro. Only downside is that you need a creature for it to work defensively.
But you could get that by fetching a Dryad Arbor with Wooded Foothills, or by casting Green Sun's Zenith maybe.
You could regard it as a red-flavored Spirit Link.

While we're at white one-drop enchantments: This also works with Reconnaissance and Gustcloak creatures. And Laccolith creatures :D
You could get your opponent in a quandary with creatures that have both triggers for getting blocked and dealing damage to them. Slith Strider is currently the only one of that kind though.
A similarly rare find: creatures with damage prevention drawbacks that overlap with the Laccolith trigger - Leery Fogbeast does well if that's your only attacker.
Creatures with Venom triggers like Cóckatrice or Tangle Asp also work.
And Witherscale Wurm doesn't need to fear about Wither with the rig either.

When cast on your opponent's creature, this is also fun with Siren effects. Try Rage Nimbus for hilarious results.

Does this count as damage prevention for the combat damage? If it does, use with effects that prevent damage prevention, such as Leyline of Punishment.

Wow. I didn't even think of the fact that you could throw this on an opponent's creature to neuter it. That's...rather ingenious.

So, with this, you can spew lava just like the 'lacs? I guess this could be ok with Swans of Bryn Argoll on the offensive and want an opponent-ally in a commander game to symbiotically draw...? Is it really a problem so big that Royal Assassin or Capsize can't handle? I guess if your opponent has a Silver Knight blocking your Goblin Lackey (of course you have out the king, war chief, chieftain, or something to make this trade still work out fine, unless a combat trick gets pulled) with the rig attached and you want to just slice up your Stuffy Doll.
