Amazing card if you're running Infect. Sadly, if you're running Infect in Commander, your general is probably Skittles, so you couldn't play this card.

I like this in Commander, as you only 20 points of commander based damage to win. What do I care if I'm handing out healing salves.

Sue me for being an ***, but you know the perfect way around the drawback? Infect.

@VampireCat: The Mimeoplasm would be a good general for an Infect or Infect/Proliferate deck.

Commander damage aside, it's a nice way to help out an underdog who's getting bullied by a powerful player. When they are being attacked, cast this to give them 3 life and beef up one of their blockers. They will usually thank you for it, and owe you one. Depends on the group you're playing with, I guess, but it's a nice political card for green.

I am heavily surprised on how underrated this is!!! it works wonders in infecting decks (in fact all of them should carry 4), and with Kavu predator it's just pure awsomeness!!!!!
Besides, it can work situationally to block with one of your creatures surprising the opponent with tapped lands buffing

One of the best cards for infect. If you play infect and you don't play this card, than you're playing it wrong.
For the sheer awesomeness of being the best infect pump in all of ever, 5/5

Invigorate and Skyshroud Cutter go well with Punishing fire.
@Discoduck I would cast this on an opponents creature if it took out a creature that was a threat to me. Its a free for all, you don't want to hurt your position to make your opponents position stronger unless you have to.
This is best used as a combat trick. If you use it to damage the player, your only netting 1 point of damage, unless you put it on a double strike or infect.
"You there! I'll give you 3 life, but you take 4 damage extra. You may not refuse this deal.
"Nailed it."

Once Upon a Time, Infect was in standard, The reason why this card was overlooked with infect is because they weren't standard at the same time. Countless people countless times made green infect decks, and every one of them were made for standard online or not, no one even thought of using this card in an Infect deck while it was standard.
Now that standard is no longer threatened by Poisons, people look to Modern to see how venomous they can make it, and have seen the true power of Infect+Inviorate.
The end!
(TL:DR - People didn't think of this card for the longest time with infect was because this and infect were never in standard at the same time).
