Looks like they picked up on the fact that nobody was using Vampire Aristocrat anyway.

Though it's not nearly as high a pick in M11 Limited as in ROE Limited.

So soon after RoE ?

Yeah, this was definitely a lot more useful and versatile in ROE Limited. Still, he could get nutty if you mix him with Mitotic Slime.

it's been way too long since bloodthrone vampire was reprinted and it's about time! i look forward to finally being able to purchase these and laughing at all the collectors who kept artificially inflating the prices!

MAD PAUPER

Common combo, reas sembling skeleton and goblin tunneler. With 4 mana you can swing for 7 the first turn and then 5 the remaining turns. Thats insane.

Reassembling Skeleton . That is all.

Very good Pauper card. However - as a black creature - I would make this a red card and reprinted Carrion Feeder as a cmc2 1/1 Vampire that can block. (Note: black vampires should use permanental counters instead)

I am pretty new to MTG, and had a question about how this would work with Eldrazi Spawn. If you sac the spawn, does the vamp get +2/+2 and also the mana from the spawn?

@PlankEyeWilly I was wondering the same thing. "I am pretty new to MTG, and had a question about how this would work with Eldrazi Spawn. If you sac the spawn, does the vamp get +2/+2 and also the mana from the spawn?"

Or if you had 2 Bloodthrone Vampires out, would it boost both of them? Or count for Viscera Seer?

Does anyone know?

@PlankEyeWilly and Kankui.
No, you would not recieve the benefits from both the spawn and the Bloodthrone Vampire, since each has an activation cost. One paid activation (sac the spawn) would give one Vampire +2/+2, or you could sac the spawn to give 1 colorless, not both.

If you have 2 Bloodthrones out, only one would recieve the benefit, as you would activate only one of thier abilities when you sac the spawn.

I Am Currently Building A Deck That Uses Bloodthrone Vampire, Pawn Of Ulamog, And Blade Of The Bloodchief To Do A Considerable Amount Of Damage If I Can Get The Vampire Through. Basically With The Blade Equiped And The Counters Which Are Generated By Pawn Of Ulamog, I Can Sacrafice A Creature And Sacrafice The Counter Giving Bloodthrone a Total of +8/+8. With a Second Creature to Sacrafice Available, And Therefore Another Counter, Bloodthrone Gets +16/+16 On My Fourth Turn Of the Game If This All Goes Right.

I don't understand why this doesn't have a class creature type. What's wrong with Rogue, or Warrior?

Mortician Beetle Is strictly better if you ask me.

*Facepalm* @Kankui:

If you give me $1, and I offer you either a $1 Coke, or a $1 Sprite, then you can't have both. The same logic applies to sacrificing creatures. One instance of "Sacrifice a creature" applied to a creature means that creature is gone, and just like your $1, can't be used to pay another "Sacrifice a creature" instance.

Also, am I the only one noticing this:

RoE rotates out in Sept. 2011.
M11 rotates out in Sept. 2011.

Why the 'eff did they reprint this!? I understand for limited, but that just seems really weird... Could've used it for a better M11 card possibility IMO.

I agree djbon. I HATE HATE HATE when Wizards reprints cards in a core set that is rotating out at the same time as the set it originally came from (basic lands as the obvious exception). Really, they couldn't have thought of some OTHER card to put in there to balance limited? Just reeks of laziness.

@ hesher, mortician is usually more powerfull, but he cant sac creatures himself, he needs other people to help, i say run bowth.

Although I prefer my trusty Carrion Feeders, this is another black card made 10x's more useful now that Reassembling Skeleton has been printed.

Mortician Beetle is this girl's pet. She had to put down poor Scarland Thrinax when he rotated out last October.

Love the art and flavour text, the fact that it is playable makes it all the more awesome.

It has a really good use with abyssal persecutor. I always attack away with the ones i have out and my abyssal persecutor and force them to choose which one to block, if they block the vampires then they take 6 and eventually i just sacrifice it or they block abyssal persecutor and then i sacrifice everything and deal a lot of damage via this guy

@Cheza-
i cant see this being red in current magic. red likes to sac artifacts, lands, and especially goblins. hell, red even likes to sac itself for bonuses, (bloodpyre elemental) or just at the end of the turn (ball lightning). black loves to sacrifice creatures. Most new players start playing in coresets, and i think they were trying to show the synergy with this and reassembling skeleton, or with the skeleton and the viscera seer.

Combine this card with Blade of the Bloodchief. A few reassembling skeletons and perhaps some bloodghast going with a set of fetchlands. And you've got yourself a beastly sacrifice deck!

If you used this ability to sacrifice a Death Cultist, would you get death cultist ability, and if why not explain.
luca_barelli
★★★☆☆ (3.0/5.0) (1 vote)
No, because you have to sacrifice the Death Cultist to its own ability for it to have an effect.

I honestly don't see this being a star in Pauper. Empty the Warrens storm combo makes 1 damage sweepers like Tremor and Seismic Shudder popular sideboards. Infect decks and Serrated Arrows are popular too, Bloodthrone hates -1/-1 counters.
Also, Reassembling Skeleton combos with this card, which are underwhelming to me to say the least, are not actually legal in Pauper. Skeleton is Uncommon.
Bloodthrone Vampire's best job, IMO, is as a tool in an EDH token deck, along with fun things like Vicious Shadows, Deranged Hermit, Saproling Symbiosis... but I prefer Carrion Feeder, Phyrexian Ghoul, and Nantuko Husk for the job and usually don't need a fourth (or a third) one of these guys. Consistency may be of varied importance for you. Bloodthrone is a nice card, overall.

If only there was one like this as a zombie, and I mean converted mana cost wise.

Nantuko Husk, and other's like it, are good creatures, but coming turn three can be a tad late in some decks. Especially mine when I want to be as aggressive as possible as quick as possible.

Not amazing, but it has it's place which produce a bunch of tokens. It can make your opponent think twice about what they plan to block.

One of my favorite sac engines. Hits the board quickly, provides some nice blocking potential while filling your graveyard, and is not powerful enough to draw much spot removal.

She's a surprisingly good finisher in a Rakdos deck. Slap a deviant glee on her... it's the most appropriate thing to do because they practically match... in terms of artwork.
