A Howling Mine that you get first dibs on? Lovely.

It's more expensive than Howling Mine, and isn't tappable to prevent your opponent from drawing, but in return, you don't lose card advantage the turn after you summon it? Not bad. It'll still help decks that need to draw lots, just like any other draw engine.

It's nice that you get dibs on this as opposed to Howling Mine, but what's also nice is that you can tap and use it in response to your opponent's actions, perhaps drawing a counter or removal spell that you need.

with the tap ability and the key in standard this is better than howling mine by quite a bit i'd wager

Got this at the prerelease. The extra card draw helped me win almost every game I got it out, and the only time I lost was because I forgot to keep an island up for a counter.

I find that this card really plays nice with Liliana Vess. Your opponent doesn't have any cards to discard? Tap, now he/she does! Need that card you are tutoring for right now? Tap, take it!
Helped me come in second place at the prerelease draft, those two did.

This is really cool! I love the flavor. (I've been reading too much Nurarahyon recently (or however its spelled) and now I really like Japanese folklorish temples and spirits and shrines and things.) And the picture is cool. And I've always loved bells. I've gotta get me some.

I cannot be the first person to mention that this will instant win the game if you have a Mind Over Matter in play and a Mythic Eldrazi in your deck or a Feldon's Cane in play??

@Markarmor - you're not. 3 weeks before you someone else posted it. ^^

In any case, a nice card. A howling mine that lets you control the draws is always nice... use it when you need more cards, stop if you don't to prevent your opponent hitting bombs.

Personally though, I like that it's comboable in standard. Temple Bell + Filigree Sages + Training Grounds + Khalni Gem = instant total mill. Of course, that goes for you too (and everyone in a multiplayer game ^^), but throw in some way to prevent your death (I use Platinum Angel; if you cast Silence in your upkeep it'll stick) and it's a way to finish off all your opponents in one fell swoop.

You have to yell "DONG!!!" every time you tap it. Its in the rules somewhere

I like it, I think it's about even with Howling Mine though. It does let you keep from giving card advantage but you also can't play it for a turn more than HM. But I really like it and use it in my goblin deck. I actually have been trying to decide if I want to use two of these and two Howling Mines or one of each or maybe just two total. Any advice would be appreciated.

better and worse than Jace 1.0 in that you can have 2 or more bells on the field but you don't have a damage sponge/ ultimate.

That Sphinx just made this a whole lot more useful... Also, Chains of Mephistopheles just makes both players discard a card before the draw, or mill one if they have no cards in hand.

The ability is better than howling mine in every way. It doesn't give your opponent cards first and you can always tap it on your opponents end phase.

Then again, howling mine cost 2 mana so I say they are about even in power.

Seems good with Consecrated Sphinx and Psychosis Crawler = Tap: Draw two cards, do 2 dmg.

Actually it's Tap: Draw three cards, do 3 dmg. You still get the draw from this card

Consecrated Sphinx..... In multiplayer. But then again there is the fact that you need Venser's Journal.
Amazing!

im realy disipointed that they aren't reprinting this in Avacyn Restored. not only could it work flavorly (kind-of) but this is the kind of card that the miracles would be awesome with (use it during your turn) oh well lets just hope for m13

Back when time sieve was in standard, this was a fun card.

- Another set of howling mines (albeit the 1 more cmc did matter). I liked it way more than font of mythos.
- Can sac to time sieve, unlike jace beleren (speaking of which, 3 vs 1UU sometimes made a difference too. Also the fact that jace died more often)
- Can untap with tez

Such a shame that alara rotated out a few months after m11.

I prefer this over Howling Mine due to facts I can give them the card at end of their turn and I can combine it with blue's all purpose untappers like Aphetto Alchemist.

In my playgroup, we've all come to refer to abilities similar to Temple Bell (i.e. Jace Beleren, Otherworld Atlas, etc.) as "Taco Bell."

For example:

"I play Jace Beleren; everybody Taco Bell." (Each player draws a card.)

It even works when each player draws let's say. . . 12 cards:

"I play Skyscribing for 12; everybody gets a Taco 12-Pack." (Each player draws 12 cards.)
