Better or worse than bitterblossom? I can't decide.
On the one hand, bitterblossom is one less mana (this is probably more important than I think it is) and the tokens are 1/1 fliers as opposed to 0/1.
This doesn't make you lose life and the tokens can be sacced for mana, in case you don't need blockers for whatever reason.

Breeding Pit says "This is not fair".
Beat it, BP is never even worth the effort to begin with. At a cost of four mana and requring a two mana fee per turn for a 0/1 makes me feel somehow, robbed.
This magnificent comes into play for ONLY three mana, no upkeep fee, and the Spawn creeps can become free mana at anytime. My point here is, forget about breeding pit and GET THIS CARD.

Like Eladamri's Vinyard, but you can chump block with your free mana!

I shed a few tears when I first read this card. Wow......just wow
It's no Bitterblossom, because it's situationally better yet situationally worse at the same time.
Turn 4, you have 5 mana (assuming you didn't miss your land drop; and even then, this is great in that situation) and you're not down 1 life, but you don't have offense to use like Bitterblossom. When comparing the two, it's getting your stuff out quicker versus beating your opponent into the ground.
I mean, there's always Broodwarden for the lulz, but I think a lot of this card's applications lie in the mana you're generating with it. You get a free dude that can chump and/or sack for mana. What's not to love?

Simply fantastic, I need another 3 of these asap. Anybody think to use this in Eldrazi Green? Now I need 4 Eldrazi Monuments too.

It's comparable, but obviously not bitterblossom. However, the decks that want to run it don't want it to be bitterblossom anyways. Green ramp decks don't want to be hurt to get lots of lil flyers, they want lots of tokens that can help ramp, and thats what this card does perfectly. No one should really compare this to bitterblossom beyond the obvious token creation, there are several differences.
Bitterblossom: creates flyers, tokens are 1/1, takes up life points, costs 2 mana, is in black color.
Awakening zone: creates non flyers, tokens are 0/1, can be sac.ed for mana, costs 3 mana, is in green.
The only comparison that can be made is 1) they are both tribal based, and 2) they both produce small token creatures.
In my opinion, awakening zone is much better, at least for green, because it enables you to play other bigger and better cards (or finish games with gigantic banefires) while still giving you chump blockers and creatures to use with brood warden. It also has amazing synnergy with butcher of malakir and gravepact, something bitter blossom just doesn't do.
The deck builds itself, use magmaw, bloodthrone vampire, traitorous instinct, awakening zone, death cultist, demonic appetite, consuming vapors, conquering manticore, butcher of malakir/gravepact, and mortician beetle. Add in It that betrays for "sactastic" goodness, so as mark says the peanut butter can really hit the chocolate. Probably red/black/green, but you can splash anything with it.

A four-of in any green Eldrazi deck. Good for devour decks too, I'd imagine.
Managed to draft one during the launch and played one game where it gave me about ten tokens total. By the end of the game, I could have hard-casted Emrakul and still had mana left over for All Is Dust. I thought this thing was awesome before I played it, now I KNOW it's great.

Please stop making fun of my pal breeding pit. Breeding pit is ridiculous in my mono-black thrull deck. With my play-set of both bad moon and thrull champion, those little tokens are easily 3/4's. also, the mana is no prob with the help of cabal coffers. Please use a card well before saying it is now obsolete.

I think of the combo of combining this with Eldrazi Monument from earlier in the block. I mean, know you have the disposable creatures to feed to the monument, allowing for a practically free +1 / +1, flying, indestructible for all of your creatures.

I'll have to second the support of the pit. It's not as good as this, but it's also common. As long as you're using the pit well, as in not for Hecatomb or Lord of the Pit, it does its job.

It's weird how good this card is, yet how good it isn't.
Oh yes, every upkeep getting a blocker/mana/fodder by far is delicious.
However, even in limited, that Spawn just cannot get to your field fast enough.
You're begging for your next fix.
An amazing card, one that I'd run a lot.
I just have a personal problem with it's being slow,
But, that's from a player who likes to run Genesis Chamber and Golgari Germination in a Persist/Sacrifice deck, thus getting that token the instant I want it.

Might make its way into T2 so it's a 2.5/5 for now. Has the potential to break into Jund decks, .Eldrazi-Green decks and even Mythic. If it does, 4/5.

doesn't quite have the explosive growth potential of Honden of Life's Web, which is way better for chump-blockers once you get even one other honden out(not that anyone's played shines in forever), but the free mana is wonderful.
I run 4 in a Mass Polymorph deck, and I couldn't be happier.

This+Doubling Season+Broodwarden+Scion of the Wild This is such a great card! Yes, it is slow, but the possibilities are endless! Consider Mephidross Vampire with Captivating Vampire and Doubling Season. But seeing as how it is a black\green deck, you could just tutor for two or more of the awakening zones. I love it and it will see lots of play in my decks. Not to mention something like this in an EDH deck opening hand is brilliant!
