Is this a playable sea serpent? At common? It isn't great, but in a deck with a lot of draw, you can really put on the pressure.

Well, at least its slightly better than all the other serpents, but that really isn't saying much.

This card pretty much won me the prerelease games, I mean, yeah sure it can't attack without an island but thanks to Convincing Mirage, the card that also came out in this very set, it makes it easy for your opponent to control an Island card. By the time it comes out usually anyway its a 7/7 or 11/11 for only 5 mana. It has a drawback of maybe not attacking the first couple turns, but those drawbacks can easily be avoided, with legal options, like Convincing Mirage.

I just realize that it's redundant to add in the rest of the "Islandhome" clause.

They coul've also call it the endless serpent of the sea.

They could at least also given it Islandwalk. would have combined together all the crappy sea serpents into one not as sucky super sea serpent.

it is only good if your oponent controls a island land card.

I. Hate. Crappy. Sea serpents. Aren't sea serpents supposed to be massive, terrible, and destructive beasts of the deep? If I were in charge, the serpents and krakens would be to blue what demons and angels are to black and white, respectively. But sadly, I'm not in charge.

In a multicolored deck, don't even think about it. But it could make a decent budget finisher for mono-blue control.

I hate this n00b garbage. Can WotC make a single decent Serpent?

i like it. in a deck with lots of island this is one of the most powerful cards you will get for just 5 mana...

We need some blue rapid groths.

The highest rated serpent on Gatherer is Lightning Serpent. The highest rated blue serpent is denizen of the deep.

So no, there are no good blue serpents.

There's something about specific cards like this that I just love. Yeah they spend most of their time chilling in the sideboard, but when you get to whip them out, it's always fun. Compare with cards like Thermal Glider or Oraxid.

Also, this is a great card for it to be only a common. TBH I would have been okay with it being rare, although most people would probably be more comfortable with it as an uncommon.

I think the point we're missing is that in a U deck, this is a 5/5 for 5. Sure, it's not great, and sure it can't attack without the help of spreading seas , but since when has blue had that kind of power without a drawback? And as a common!

Has potential
Sphinx of jwar isle
Baneslayer angel
Celestial colonnade
Had potential

Well actually, if it coated, like 3cmc THEN it wouldve had potential

THIS CARD IS AWESOME! IM MAKING A SERPENT DECK!
Also, any Spike's in my playgroup get targeted immediately whenever playing multiplayer casual. It's quite common to face defeat in the form of 'oh so casual' decks, be it an assault by bugs, eaten by wolves, crushed by hydras, run over by giants, swarmed by dwarves, and a multitude of other horrible Magic related deaths. And now to add to the mix; obliterated by watery serpents.
HATERS GONNA HATE.

Mono-blue has a decent serpent, at long last.

not so fast. The highest rated blue serpent is that sCRAPdiver Serpent.
...
Why!? Just 'cause it's standard!? c'mom... it will never be better than the Endless Sea one.

Use with Stormtide Leviathan or Fishliver Oil.

Don't know why it's so splashable, no one but Mono-Blue would ever use it.

Surprisingly good, even with the almost-Islandhome. Even if it can't attack, it can still block like a champ and gobble up grounded creatures. The art helps too.

Not only is it a 5/5 for 5 in a pure blue deck, but its getting an (almost) permanent +1/+1 every turn after. Solid, especially for a blue common. And, as previously mentioned, there are HUNDREDS of ways to give people Islands. Overall, solid card, could actually have been a decent uncommon as well.

Look at that art! If you wanted to maindeck, run with x4 spreading seas. The cantrip is needed for that type of effect, and it can be useful verse 3 color, or threatening non basics.

5/5 > in a island deck isn't that bad
