There are numerous blue creatures that can only attack if the defender controls an island, as well.

Mana denial too. Turn their Savage Lands into an island during their upkeep and it...becomes less useful unless they have an instant. So, not that exciting, but it has its uses.

Also, you can use it on your own lands, so your, say, Taiga can feel like the most broken card in magic.

This card would be hilarious nowadays against Jund.

If I remember it correctly this dude saw quite some tournament play in merfolk decks. With just one mana he is very cheap, his ability cost's nothing to activate, and makes your stuff unblockable if you have a lord of atlantis in play. Or you just hose lands.

I like to use these guys when my opponent plays a multicolor deck and only has one land of a certain color. If he does't use blue mana in his deck, this could mess him up pretty nice, especially at the start of a game. Of yes, and islandwalk and more blue mana yourself and all that. Usefull fish.
Uh, I know if you metagame think hard enough there is no "strictly better than", but Reef Shaman? This could be an earlier version, don't care enough to check.

Strictly worse than Reef Shaman IMO. Yes, it's earlier, but not by a very long time. Reef Shaman is arder to ping to death than Tidal Warrior, and it can make a land any basic type of your choice.

@jfre81: It's not strictly worse because it has 1 power. Strictly worse means worse in every situation. If your opponent had 1 life left, which would you rather be swinging with? A 0/2 or this?
