When this came out I instantly popped in 4 in my pandemonium deck. Once you have 1 in your GY and 1 in hand, you win. Making a streamlined 4 colour deck isn't hard. Good casual card. Will float in the right competitive deck. Excellent elegance in the design.

how could you put four in your deck, runaway? I thought only one of each legendary card could be in play at once.

Legendary does not change the number you can have in your deck. That is still 4. However the combo runway speaks of does not work. If you play the one from your hand he returns the one in your graveyard. Then the new one triggers and you must put the CIP trigger on the stack with the target (right now both are still in play, so you can't target either of them) and the pandemonium trigger also goes on the stack (you get to pick the order, but it isn't relevant here) then you would get priority so state based effects are checked and the legend rule puts both sphinxes in your graveyard. This happens AFTER the return to play trigger goes on the stack and targets for it are chosen but before anyone gets priority. You still get SOMETHING back but it can't be either of the sphinxes.

then just add a sacrifice outlet to the mix ;) anyway, he played the card in his pandemonium deck. 10 damage to the dome will probably be enough at that point in time. I've actually seen people play this in their standard esper decks lately. Didn't even know that deck existed...

Sharuum is a very awesome card, being a beefy flier as well as having an awesome graveyard-to-play ability which can target any number of irritating artifacts that may have recently been put into the graveyard (Scourglass, anyone?). Her price is also something to be giddy about, as you should essentially get 2 very good artifacts for the price of one, making Sharuum very efficient and sneaky in any artifact based deck. And yes, Sharuum is a "her;" Note the "She" in her flavor text as well as certain tell-tale anatomical structures in her art.

As mentioned in a recent article on wizards.com, the double Sharuum does indeed work. Because both creatures die when state based effects are checked they are put into the graveyard even before their abilities go onto the stack. Thus, when the abilities are put onto the stack you select a target (one of the Sharuums) bringing it back. Rinse repeat.

Are you kidding masterofetherium? I know Izzy is decently good, but sorry to break it to you. John Avon is a lot better! He doesn't do much illustration any more, but he has been illustrating for a long time, and I think you should look at his cards. All of the newer artists get all of the credit because they make tens of illustrations, but you people forget the old awesome illustrators. Anyways, I like Sharuum the Hegemon.

yes duoclops is right. state based effects, such as multiple of a legendary, are checked whenever a player would receive priority, which is also when a triggered ability will be put on the stack, so both sharuums will be in the graveyard when the ability goes on the stack, great with glassdust hulk/glaze fiend =).

There are some wicked combos out there that no one has mentioned thus far.
Master Transmuter can drop him for 1, and if you already have a Sharuum in the graveyard, you can bring him back. This would mean they both get sent to the graveyard, but since the Sharuum did hit the field, his ability still has to resolve, so you can target the Sharuum in your graveyard bringing him back, which in turn brings your other Sharuum back, and there we have an infinite loop.
I haven't done too much research into this, but i believe there are some cards that can use this leaving play/entering play effect, such as Sludge Strider. Every time the Sharuum effect happens, you can pay 4 and gain 4 life with your opponent losing 4.
Having a Glassdust Hulk on the field before starting the Sharuum combo would mean its power and toughness are infinite, and it is unblockable. Similar effect with Glaze Fiend
Godtracker of Jund would grow to infinity as well.
With a Minion Reflector, every time a Sharuum comes into play, you can copy it, giving you another target in your graveyard to hit. would be very useful versing a mill deck, having a very hefty graveyard would give you everything you wanted out of it, paying only 2 each time.
Soul Warden. I would like to see your opponent do infinity damage next turn.
Where Ancients Tread would instagib your opponents.
Electropotence is another Blue/Red combo.
All of these are Standard Legal combos

Corpse Connoisseur, sack your best artifact creature, then transmute this onto the battlefield and put that artifact creature onto the battlefield as well. Of course, might be a bit tricky to pull of and it would probably be easier with a Sphinx Summoner and Master Transmuter...

EDIT:

Also, did anyone mention double Sharuum + Disciple of the Vault?

This card is beastly! You get the card advantage inherent in her ability, which can be used to great effect (See Scourglass, Inkwell Leviathan, etc). And you get that lovely 5/5 flying body on top of it. All for a very efficient price. Overall, just a good, solid card. It's no Sphinx of Jwar Isle, but in the right situation, this can make life very difficult for your opponent.

@A3Kitsune: Correct, Sharuum's a lady.

So are all other sphinxes. People, the Greek sphinx (a singular creature which MtG sphinxes are obviously based from) is, by definition, a creature with the head of a beautiful woman, the body of a lion, and the wings of a bird. Male sphinxes, such as Zendikar's retarded hobo-sphinxes (to fittingly compliment the block's retarded "native and primal" vampires) are the exception, not the rule.

On a casual reanimator or legacy/vintage reanimator, if this is paired with a Magister Sphinx, it's a possible 2nd turn kill or even a first turn kill if you somehow manage to give them haste (like putting Anger in your graveyard and having a Badlands in play.

It annoys me that Hegemon isn't capitalised in the flavour text.. otherwise it would be a 5.

@ I Make Toilets

Clearly she throws it at the protaganist after a rant about the human conditon and religion.

WHAT IS A MAN? *throws glass* BUT A MISERABLE PILE OF LIES AND SECRETS?! And I'm a sphinx, I pretty much know all that, sooooo... now what?

Flash

Think about that a minute...

Flash her out, she enters play and is sacrificed as part of Flash's resolution. Her ETB ability goes on the stack the next time a player receives priority, targeting herself since she's already in the graveyard.
When she comes back into play her ability triggers again, targeting whatever you want.

I was going to say Spine of Ish Sah but then I read over it again.
It struck me that the Spine was probably made specifically not to synergize with this card.
But, still, great card. 5/5

The flavor text implies that Sharuum has some kind of go-between who is always with her and writes down every riddle she hears. Whenever someone wants to speak to Sharuum, they must meet the middle man outside her chambers and present their riddle. Is it then cross-referenced against the list of riddles Sharuum has heard before entry is granted.

After a couple of turns in my one reanimatour deck:

exhume Sharuum, 'reanimate' a magister sphinx.

you know have 1 turn left to live.

Always a great card if you got something stashed in the graveyard. Almost as good as goblin welder in some cases.

Infinite mana with ashnod's altar, one of these in the grave and one being put into play (from the grave as well perhaps?)

One comes into play, targets the other one, while that's on the stack, sac the first for {2} and let the other resolve. Repeat as necessary. Infinite combos with any non-mana non-tap sac outlet. Infinite counters with carrion feeder for example.

Further, it's a "may" clause, so if you do this you can break the cycle and keep your hegemon. Even better? Stuff like Shallow Grave will net you a permanent Hegemon instead of a temp one (if you wish.)

Here's my question: I cast Sharuum the Hegemon, it goes on the BF, then triggers it's ability. I choose Darksteel Forge which is in my GY, put it on the BF and.....Here it is: Can my opponent snipe Sharuum before it becomes indestructible or the ability ''enters the battlefield'' still passes priority to my opponent to destroy it before Darksteel Forge goes on the BF?
Exelia

@PagHimself
I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly, but here goes: Sharuum's ability goes on the stack, Darksteel Forge's ability doesn't. So yes, your opponent does have a brief window of opportunity to snipe Sharuum before her ability resolves. Once Darksteel Forge hits the battlefield though, Sharuum immediately becomes (or gains) indestructible.

To gain audience with the hegemon, one must bring a riddle she has not heard.

What have I got in my pocket?

One of the most powerful generals in multiplayer EDH. 6 mana is chump change for an artifact deck with all of the big mana rocks. It's extremely resilient because Sharuum is artifact recursion as your general, and the deck has plenty of sac outlets to stop exiling removal. However the deck can also win easily even if the graveyard gets exiled multiple times because all of the individual pieces are still strong on their own. Basically, in multiplayer EDH you need two people to constantly keep the Sharuum deck in check.

For reference, my friend has an extremely nerfed Sharuum build (it used to be very strong, then we would just gang up on him every single game) with no counterspells, no darksteel forge, no disciple of the vault, no soulscour, etc., and it still has an above average win percentage (if we have 10 games in a 4-man FFA, it'll win 3-4 games for example).
