Not as good as his questing compatriot, especially now that the bounce ability can't be used with damage on the stack. Trample ability is the only thing questing phelddagrif covets, but since it just gives only trample, it obviously means less 1/1 hippos than a repeatable pump effect. And in most cases, giving him flying would make trample superfluous anyway.

I knew a guy who had a Phelddagrif signed by the artist Melissa Benson. Why would he get it signed by a different artist? Because it's a flying purple hippo! It's not supposed to make sense.

made an EDH with him, had the questing one as well, but man it was fun. Always negotiated my way to second with hippos and cards. I guess not the best deck since i can't recall it winning...

everyone's favorite winged purple hippo.

rain of gore only works on lifegain sources controlled by the opponent. otherwise it would be the most broken card ever

If you rearrange the letters you get "Garfield PhD". Fun fact.

I love this guy just because it's so ridiculous. Also makes a great EDH general if you're into the politics aspect of multiplayer.

You know, at first glance I thought it was an Un card.

While Rain of Gore doesn't work with this guy, imprinting False Cure on an Isochron scepter works :P

Anyways, awesome card, awesome art, atleast in my eyes. I collect whatever random/funny (in the sense of weird abilities/effects, mostly) non-un-set cards I can find, and I would love to get my hands on a pair of these and it's questing counterpart :P

Why are the abilities in a different order in the Oracle text?

I had to make a statue out of modelling clay and paint it in middle school art cla ss, so I made Pheldy. I still have it on my desk.

Way to punish your enemy for using Leyline of Sanctity .

@Todzik: If your opponent has Leyline of Sanctity out, this card's abilities can't be used at all.

A lot of people make "Group Hug" EDH decks with this guy that benefit everyone and don't plan on winning, but it's very possible to use him as an effective general. He's fantastic for multiplayer politics (letting you rescue any nonthreatening player about to lose), bounces to avoid the frequent boardwipes, swings for 4 general damage in the air, and lets you play 3 colours including blue. It's even better when no one takes your phelddagrif deck seriously.

Suture Priest is actually the way my friend won spectacularly with his Phelddagrif EDH. He set up a bunch of miscellaneous ramp and draw engines, that mostly helped everyone else as well, so we all just left him alone, or became allies with him. All of a sudden though, Mirari's Wake, kicked Rite of Replication on Suture Priest, and then gratuitous amounts of hippos were given to all. Death by some kind of hippo storm. It was beautiful.

He's in Bant colors - wouldn't it have been great if a Bant knight had been drawn riding a Phelddagrif?

Okay, so you use Bazaar Trader to donate this to your opponent, along with something that makes white mana. Then, you set up the Mindslaver + Academy Ruins combo with Grand Architect to speed it up and get out a Drogskol Reaver. Then, once they're locked under the Mindslaver, have the opponent use Phelddagrif's white ability (choosing you as the opponent) to make them use their mana to gain you life AND draw cards! It's totally Legacy worthy!

Play him as your multiplayer EDH general with tons of infinite mana combos.
Go infinite, give everyone trillions of hippos and trillions of life.
Scoop.

@ProbablyThatGuy - I like to think that his opponents fell down due to all the hippo crap that would result.

@TDL At first, I thought they printed cards in WUBRG order, but that can't be right. More modern things like Stoic Angel have it in the GWB order.

However, five-colored cards like Child of Alara have it in WUBRG, so I have no clue.

As far as I can see, coloured mana in mana costs is printed in the clockwise order of the color wheel: Green, White, Blue. Green comes first, then White, then Blue (followed by Black and Red, but these aren't relevant on this card). Older cards follow the same system but always begin with White and goes clockwise from there. White, Blue, ... ... Green.
WhiteBlueBlackRedGreen follows this pattern too but as it includes all five colours, it begins with the first colour on the wheel, White, as it's above the others. I'm interested to see what happens with Wedge creatures under this current system, whether it still follows this rule (closest to White comes first) or whether they make an exception just for those cards.

Today, colors are always printed in wooberg cyclical order (...BRGWUBRGWUBRG...), but starting with whatever leaves the least space between colors. That's why a the modern oracle text gives GreenWhiteBlue instead of WhiteBlueGreen (The older version skipped black and red between the blue and green symbols, the newer version doesn't skip anything). There are two possiblities for wedge mana costs, but in practice they're ordered with the enemy color first then the two ally colors, for example BlackGreenWhite for Ghave.

And everybody knows Phelddagrif is an anagram of Garfield, Ph.D., right? It's a tribute to Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic.

EDH can certainly like him; mostly because of general damage (so you the lifegain doesn't matter much.) He avoids removal and has various combos he can perform.

Rancor would work wonders on him for that purpose, as would the myriad other green pumps. How many green flying generals are there anyway..?

Can't you see the best part about this card?

It's a 4/4 for 4.
