Rain of Gore says "If a spell or ability would cause its controller to gain life, that player loses that much life instead." So obviously this card would not work. Great card tho.

This card looks absolutely disgusting. No, the abilities are fine, but just looking at it somehow makes me sick.

Even though this was played with punishing fire for an awesome effect.. I still don't like it. Your stuck with colorless or giving your opponent extra life, and anyone thats played with soul warden knows that can add up. Sooner or later someone will find out a trick around that strategy, as they always do, and then it will be back to giving your opponents life for using colored mana. I'd much rather play something like a sunpetal grove, that doesn't even come into play tapped if you have a forest or plains. As far as removal goes.. punishing fire is awesome, but there are other ways to get repeating burn without resorting to that individual combo.

I would not compare this to M10 lands, I'd compare it with painlands: what would you choose?: losing life or giving your foe life?. And no, the Punishing Fire and this is a stupid combo in my opinion, you are giving your opponent life jut to burn it again and again and again... Kederekt Parasite and Quest for Pure Flame seems a more solid combo for me.

how is the punishing fire combo bad at all??? I think that if the combo was stupid it would have helped Brian win austin.. I think that its an awesome combo especially when fighitng against small annoying creatures

The punishing fire combo is only good if you have nothing else to do, IMO. 3 mana -> 1 damage. Most burn will get you more damage than mana cost. Of course, it's good for wiping the field if they have a lot of chump blockers, but it doesn't seem like the greatest thing.

Yes, the combo with Punishing Fire is great. PT Austin All the Way!
Maybe it's just me but I love the art and concept of a grove of "flame trees". Great alternative to painlands, mathematically it's A LOT better to give ur opponent life than dimnishing urs, not to mention ur not getting close to die, ur just AT MOST gaining them a turn before dying, MAYBE...

Amazing that people don't think that this card plus Punishing Fire is good. The point is not to burn them every turn, the point is to dominate board position which is how you win every standard game. This is recursive removal without even the drawback of losing life which is more punishing vs. pure aggro/burn decks than having your opponent gain a measly 1 life. To put into perspective of the types of recursive damage removal spells R&D is willing to print, take a look at Razor Boomerang or Beacon of Destruction.

Kbot's right. You don't use the Punishing Fire to ping your opponent down, one life at a time, you use to tear through your opponent's creatures and let that Wild Nacatl swing in for 3 every turn. It's a cheap, effective tool that can give you a little extra power in the later game.
An interesting counterpoint to the Ice Age painlands.

Rain of Gore. Even if you don't need the colored mana, still take it because it will hurt your opponents. FANTASTIC!

In addition to the combo potential, this card is really good. Assuming you're playing with other lands, most of the time you can use the colorless ability, but the R/G one is there just in case, such as early on. That will only lead to a small amount of life. The only downside is that these two colors care the most about the opponent's life total.

But the art is absolutely gorgeous. It's one of my favorite land arts.

Ordered this online about a week ago, just before the Modern format was released. Price jumped from 4-5 dollars per card to about 20-60 dollars per card. Couldn't help but laugh. This card is amazing with Punishing Fire btw. 5/5

So I hear dual lands that come into play untapped and lands that combo with cards in your graveyard are good. Wait, this does both? And even casts Wild Nacatl?
@ Blazer_Dawg:
That strategy with Rain of Gore doesn't work because your opponents don't control the lifegain effect. Rain of Gore punishes lifelinkers.

I agree. Kibler is the menace responsible for Caw-Blade pre-ban.

Good card but I just don't see it as $50 good. Lovely art and pretty cool synergy with a handful of cards, but you can get a Tagia for around the same price, and the ABUR duals have good reason to be expensive. Inb4 "limited edition cards aren't legal in modern".
