I can just see this being tons of fun in a wall type deck, with something like doran, and sapling of colfenor. You would get to choose what damage was applied either power or toughness of any creature in play, and your sapling can deal 5 while still being indestructible, and gain lots of life with all the high toughness creatures.
I find it funny how this is rated so much better than Dwarven Thaumaturgist despite being pretty much the exact same card. I suppose this has to do with Merfolks being a much better tribe, and also this effect feels much more blue than red.
Run with Silvergill Dowser for creature removal of course (Merrow commerce lets you belt it out twice), but I also run it with indomitable ancients in my blue white Merfolk deck. Great defense, and you can sneak it in with the power and toughness switched and a double cleave for the win, or go unblockable to get a two swing win.
