Interesting. Gives you a nice boost when you need it, but you better have some mana next turn, and hope your opponent doesn't have a Mana Short

This is a card for decks that plan on winning on turn 1 and need an extra 2 colorless mana. Or, for people who have voltaic keys and other such things.
Of course, back in the day people do way more broken things with fast mana (combined with efficient card draw) than a turn three Karn. When Tolarian Academy was the norm, Mana Vault might have seemed rather "normal". Today, this would be insanely powerful.

Mana Vault, like Thoughtlace and Bayou, was a crap rare. This piece of junk artifact gave you 3 mana, which was good, but then you had to pay 4 to untap it. The card just oozed inefficiency. So into my box o' blah. It never occurred to me that a turn 1 Mana Vault could mean a turn 2 Air Elemental, Serra Angel, or Sengir Vampire. It never occurred to me that it was worth taking a point of damage per round for that kind of start. It never occurred to me, that is, until I played against someone whom it HAD occurred to, and who promptly mopped the floor with my pokey posterior using this very technique.
