This is a great card to build around. With 3 cmc for a 3/4 body you are in great shape even if your opponent has no cards with activated abilities.

This card is pretty good to restrict opponent plainwalker usage.

Right, since a Planeswalker is a card type which inherently uses activated abilities to work, this guy would shine even more these days in Standard (than he already did back then).

I'm leaning to 'yes,' but does this guy trigger if you activate abilities from the graveyard, like carionette, or unearth?

{1}{R}{G} for a 3/4 beatstick that burns my opponent for just trying to play the game? Yes please!

This has to be one of the most beautiful frame-art combos in Magic.

The best part is you can redirect damage to planeswalkers. They can only -1 that Jace Beleren so many times :D

Shame that damage isn't Combat Damage or he'd be a star Commander.

"Planeswalkers? What Planeswalkers?"

Definitely one of the best Gruul cards, with a cheap cost, good stats, and a fun ability.

Kataklysmic, it triggers for ALL activated abilities, including those in the graveyard and hand. Which is cool, because it works against Transmute and Forecast.

His name could receive errata to "He Who Disrupts Planeswalkers" or "He Who Kills Combos."

This guy's still probably better than Ruric Thar, the Unbowed despite the huge difference in abilities.
1) He doesn't have to attack, but is still a good beatstick
2) His ability doesn't punish you nearly as much
3) He is much cheaper and more useful in the early game
And finally
4) His ability is just weak enough that I can guarantee your opponent will take damage from him, shrugging it off as if it was insignificant, which is when you beat them into a pulp.

Should've reprinted this guy....

Burning-Tree Shaman + Soltari Guerrillas + Near-Death Experience. Drop them in that order, then turn 6, once Near-Death's check is on the stack, activated Soltary's ability as many times as you want. Burning-Tree Shaman deals 1 damage for each activation, you hit 1 life, Near-Death sees you're there and you win. Too weak and breakable for anything with a sense of power level, but fun in casual. This also works with Spirit Mirror, Varchild's Crusader, Viscid Lemures, any equipment with Equip {0} while Leonin Shikari is out, and Blinking Spirit,

Excellent sideboard card for Modern RGx aggro decks against Splinter Twin decks.

@NARFNra
That doesn't work, as Near-Death Experience has an intervening if-clause. You need to ping yourself to 1 at the end of the opponent's turn.

According to the flavor text, rubbing two sticks together and eating with utensils aren't activated abilities?
