Excellent card if used right. Giving him vigilance as thaviel said gives him a big bonus. Works well with mass untaps, soldier pumpers, equips (especially the cheaper ones like bonesplitter), reinforce cards, and other pumpers (such as the weaker pump creature kjeldoran elite guard).
With untap spells / abilities his power can grow exponentially. Vigilance can give him double power or let him attack and pump another creature. Soldier pumpers like the sword smith make him more effective. equips like bonesplitter are very cheap ways to improve his power to make him more effective, and don't lose their value if he dies. Reinforce cards help him get bigger to make your other creatures bigger at will. Basically letting you move the reinforce around where its needed.
And the best part is all those named combos are cumulative.

Brutal sinergy with vigilance and stat-boosters (Shared Triumph and Daru Warchief, to say the least, and Mobilization, of course). Its versatility is its most powerful asset: it can essentialy counter direct damage and -X/-X effects, it boosts itself for double damage when attacking or blocking (no vigilance needed when it blocks!), and its ability can be used during battle for some nasty shenanigans :)

Probably a good combo with Umbral Mantle. First give something +1, +1, then if you can pay 3 give it an additional +3, +3, then if you can pay another 3 give something an additional +5, +5, etc.
Tap it to give itself +1/+1. (2/2) Untap with the mantle. (4/4) Tap it to give itself +4/+4 (8/8) Untap it with the mantle. (10/10) Tap it to give itself +10/+10. (20/20) Untap it with the mantle. (22/22)
Etc, etc. (46/46, 94/94...) With Freed From the Real it's a bit slower. (2/2, 4/4, 8/8, 16/16...)

Uhm.... This guy can effectively double the effect of giant growth, guys.
If you are on the defensive, giant growth him, declare your blockers, and then tap him to give another creature you control +4/+4. That's actually kinda awesome, in my opinion!
If you give him vigilance, he basically doubles his power, or gives another attacking creature you control a bonus. Equip Sword of Vengence and he is a 6/4 first strike, trample, and haste guy! Even better, give him Ring of Thune! He will swing for a LOT of damage before long. And if they chump block him, what's really nice is that you can tap him to boost another one of your creatures (who DIDN'T get blocked, or who needs saving). I like him, and I think he deserves a higher rating.

Unless you mean the combo of Halimar Excavator and Rite of replication (180 card mill). Then, yeah, more precious than water.
Best used with Chant of the Skifsang to make a U/W Visara as early as turn 3.
