so if you have 6 islands, these creatures can be put on the battlefield, for free.

I maintain, and have maintained since Darksteel came out, that no mono-colored deck is complete without the appropriate affinity golem. That said, this is not one of the better ones, much rather have a Dross Golem.
Dies to a playset of Storm Crows but takes one of them down with it -- 5 stars for balls of quicksilver.

IMO, the best Affinity Golem. The stats on all of them are pretty strong for monocoloured decks, but mono Blue benefits the most out of all of the roles this golem plays for it:
A good early blocker, always strong in Blue when it can kill most 1 or 2 drops without trading. An evasive, 10 turn clock when you don't need to block. Artifacts to fuel Blue's artifact shenanigans. Most important, an easy drop when you want mana for counters up. If you drop this on turn 4 with all islands dropped, you've got two mana open for counters; exactly what most decks want to do.

This is one of the first cards I ever owned, though it was long before I started playing. This is actually one of the cards that made me ever so curious about Magic. Fitting, then, that I began in Scars.
It's been a while since I've seen this card, until now when I random carded my way here. Knowing what I do now about the game, I can finally appreciate how nice a card it is. So many memories of trying to figure out the little bits and pieces of the dozen or so cards I had.. "What's an Island?" and "How do these numbers work?" I would ask myself all the time. Today, I perk up at the word 'Affinity', knowing how insane it once was.
For playability, It gets 4/5 For nostalgia, 9001/5

Part of a cycle of golems from Darksteel, each with Affinity:
This card is great. djflo summarized it nicely so I won't drone on about how good it is, but it does everything a mono blue deck needs. I will add that interestingly enough, these creatures also have an interesting interaction with the Dragon enchantments from Scourge, such as Dragon Scales. While they have a higher printed CMC, they can actually come out much sooner, allowing you to get benefit from these auras earlier than anticipated.

These seem to be the successors of Mirrodin's unremarkable cycle:
