This is not that bad of a card.
Any recurring "return from graveyard to battlefield" is a good thing in my book.
The payment is slightly steep, but it's still profitable.

EDH CARD OF THE WEEK #2
How i love thee Strands of Night, let me count the ways.
1) when you start at 40; 2 life to recur your best guy is gravy 2) that says ETB people! thats, i evoke my shriekmaw, then bring back my shriekmaw suck it other creatures. 3) The art is kick-ass 4) Makes EDH staples like Yavimaya Elder even better! 5) Works with the legendary Eldrazi in order to reanimate them. 6) Tired of stalemates? This card and its on board recursion engine will dominate a game if left unanswered!
The only downside is obvious, this is not an early game card because it can wreak your mana base if you abuse it to much to early. I have found strands of night to excel in black decks that are paired with green so that you can use land ramp as recursion spells! As mentioned above it works fabulously at thinning your deck while recurring green ETB put a land into play card. Also.... can you say Woodfall Primus or either of the titans? its a fatties best friend and deserves a slot in you G/B deck!
Solemn Simulacrum, almost completely pays for itself and nets you a card every time it dies.

Zombie Gardener {2}{B} Creature- Zombie uncommon When Zombie Gardener enters the battlefield, you may put a Swamp from your graveyard into play. If you do, you gain 2 life. 2/3

@Krypnyt: Not bad, but I think it would be much more 'black' if it made an opponent lose 2 life instead and cost . Or maybe it could even have both effects, though that would be pushing it for an uncommon.

Primeval Titan would work perfectly with a sac outlet or even just attacking each turn. A decent card from what I can see if you play to it's strengths.

I think you're forgetting what Emrakul's last ability is.
And artifacts die to counterspells as well, but I agree with what you're saying.

@Ligerman30: First of all, counterspell counters artifacts too, you F****** Idiot! and nothing "dies" to it. Plus, you can't just stick an emrakul in your graveyard for later, cuz it returns your whole graveyard to the library. What you could do is entomb emrakul, then in response to it's ability activating, reanimate it with this.
