This + Sensei's Divining Top (both searchable by Trinket Mage) = 11 mana to take any nonland permanent permanently! ^^

Does his name not imply that he wants to be called Tobyor and not Toby?
...err wait, i misread this name. Damn you, Spaceless names without camel cases >.>'

Let's conjure up your memories about the stack: Last in, first out (or LIFO for short). Targets are checked twice, once an ability goes on the stack and once it resolves.

So the first thing you do is tapping the Top.
Then you activate the Totem's ability the first time and choose the Top.
Now you activate it a second time and finally target an opponent's permanent.
If nobody wants to respond anymore, the stack gets emptied:
You exchange control with the Totem and your opponent's goodie.
Then the other exchange resolves and gives you back the totem and leaves your opponent with the Top.
Last but not least the Top's ability resolves, you draw a card, put the Top on top, and you opponent is left with nothing.
Activating the Totem's ability twice and replaying the Top amounts to 11.

That trick also works with Phyrexian Infiltrator.
The Top will also do a good job with Puca's Mischief or Confusion in the Ranks, although you'll have to alter its types in order to get more than just artifacts in the latter case.

Tel-Jilad Stylus also works with this Totem. If you add Artificer's Intuition, you can grab permanents for 6Blue and discarding an artifact card.

If you just use this card you'll have to find another one that you want to donate your opponent.
Power Artifacts also does a good job with this card and reduces the cost of this act from 10 to 6.

Can the Totem be used with Rishadan Pawnshop or am I actually jacking people off?

What in the nine hells would happen if you were to duplicate the effect with Rings of Brighthearth?

Even if it is more color-intensive and comes out later, I like Memnarch better for recurring permanent stealing. Memnarch can take lands, too.

@Sorian

When Rishadan Pawnshop's ability resolves, Avarice Totem would no longer be under your control and so the target would be invalidated.

Oh wow, I had it all wrong..

What I thought this card did until i just now read the rulings is "{5}: Target a nonland permanent with a spell or ability that you control. Exchange control of Avarice Totem."

I used to think that this was the one and only way of targeting through shroud, or using Stone Rain on a planeswalker :/

I know we like listing combos and all (you big bunch of Johnnys) but what's wrong with playing this the way it's SUPPOSED to be used? Just wait...till J. Random Sucker is tapped out (or at least doesn't have 5 mana) USE it and then pop it (via your favorite destroy target artifact) or boomerang it?

..oh yeah, this and capsize. Nevermind, I'm a Johnny too.

I think this card is underrated. And here is my justification:

First of all, this only costs 1 mana and is colorless. So any color can use it and it comes out immediately. There are many 1 mana artifacts that arn't that good, but people run them anyway just because they are a cheap artifact. (Maybe they need metalcraft or they are planning to storm)

Just think about how powerful it is to exchange something at just the right moment... At the end of your opponent's turn, if they are tapped out, tap 5 and take their biggest creature! On your turn, what do you do? You swing! Imagine taking their Eldrazi rigth as they cast it... It could be devistating.

You could even use this card defensively as well. You could exchange with their biggest creature to prevent them from killing you for the turn. It feels as though too many people are turned off by the fact that your opponent gets the option to exchange back. But to me, it feels as though for just 1 mana early game, it could sit there on the board and just threaten the fact that you could exchange at any time.

It's just pure bargaining power... Speaking of bargaining, have you tried passing stuff with your allies? Or how about good ol' politics in mulitplayer?

Did I mention this card is fun?

This card was masterfully designed in my opinion. I give this card a golden 5/5.

If you enchanted the Totem with Steal Artifact, then activated it, would it swap and then immediately come back to you before your opponent has a chance to activate it?

I was playing against my personal MTG rival's Zedruu EDH deck, and we played tug of war between this and his mimic vat with my general in it for about an hour. Eventually I screamed and ripped my shirt off. First time I've ever rage-quitted a mtg game

Love how the ruling teaches you how to abuse the stack, lol.
