A -cost 5/5 is always good! What's that? It's really a 3/3? What're you talking about?

A vanilla, grounded, 5/5 for 5 in red?
Dare I make a certain comparison to a 5/5 dragon for 5...?

This is a pretty good biclops, as it makes the opponent make a hard choice.

A vanilla 5/5 for 5 mana is only good in Limited. And that's what this will become 95% of the time because no one's going to choose to take 5 damage in lieu of two +1/+1 counters. That's the problem with most of the tribute cards--they deceptively seem to present a decision but actually have an answer that will be chosen most of the time--and it's not the one you will be wanting.

It's worth pointing out the politics here in multiplayer games - you pick someone who has to choose if you get a 5/5 or if EVERYONE takes damage. "If you let me have the damage effect, I know it hurts you a little bit too, but we really need to take out this other player. Wouldn't you rather have him take 5 damage so my attack will kill? After all, you're on his bad side, I'm pretty sure he'd be attacking you next turn..."
A great common, and one of my favorite cards in the set. Considering Lava Axe costs you , why not get a Hill Giant with it? Even if the tribute is paid, it's a 5/5 vanilla for 5 mana, which shockingly there are none of in red!
Some fun and odd stuff you can play this with:
Where Ancients Tread: Opponents take 5 damage and you get a 5/5, or take 5 and you get a 3/3. Furnace of Rath: Deal 10 damage to all opponents, or 10 per turn when he attacks. Pain Magnification: Threaten the opponent with discarding in addition to 5 damage, or each time if they let it through in combat.

I play this guy a lot in the FNM draft at my store, and most of the time people take the 5 damage. only times they don't is when they have a destroy spell ready. its generally by the third one they start thinking about putting counters on.
