Finally, something to stop Rakdos from pwning the Limited meta, too bad she would have been way more useful back in RTR :/

It might be because I love Restoration Angel but I can't help but like this card.

My brother runs an annoying RG Krenko, Mob Boss deck... I can't wait to see the look on his face when I drop this

Just a beast card. I mean, a sealed defensive (or offensive if timed right) bomb, a great sideboard card that shuts down dozens of strategies, and is easily abusable in and out of Standard, and a real troll card in eternal formats. Especially Commander, I can see this crad absolutely annoying the crap out of everyone at the table.

Remember, it says non-land PERMANENTS, not just creatures, so it'll shut down artifacts and enchantments (with activated abillities) too.

This + Conjurer's Closet = RDL (Red Deck Loses)

Good size body with pro red is decent, Lavina's ability is both offensive and defensive, and works well with flicker effect. Very nice.

This thing might as well say that you get an extra turn and you kill all of your opponent's planeswalkers, plus it dodges burn and you get to punch your opponent in the face.

I still wish this had flash. ...of course, looking at what this card DOES have, that flaw is just about Seinfeld-level trivial.

and YOU get a detain, and YOU get a detain.....

This card seemed to be everywhere at the prerelease, me and 3 of my friends as well as a bunch of my opponents all opened copies of lavinia.

Ran this in the prerelease with Species Gorger.
Pretty much locked down my opponents.
Pro red stopped it getting burnt and made a perfect red-blocker inbetween bounces.

I just realised it detains artifacts and enchantments as well. It stops icy manipulator!

What prevents me from loving this card is the fact that after rotation, after cards like Cloudshift and Restoration Angel rotate out, Lavinia will be a a blah card. For now, she is giving Bant decks a nasty tool to play with, but once rotation comes I don't think she'll be that special.

Looks like the Wicked Queen found her way into the government.
I bet all she secretly wants is to detain women that her magic mirror told her are prettier than her.

How useful she'll be post-rotation will depend on whether or not they print more Flicker effects.

As she is, though, she's a good mid-range drop. A great blocker against creature aggro, that also locks down pretty much the entire board when she comes in. Really, the only thing you'll have to worry about is if your opponent has played 5+cmc cards of their own, and it's somewhat unlikely that any of those will be a true threat right away.

Also, if you don't mind losing her to the Legend rule, you could always cast a second one on a later turn and trigger her mass-Detain (I think... might be wrong on that).

So, she's the ultimate Azorius badass, according to the new Uncharted Realms article: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/ur/248

This card is seriously underrated. Get this and a conjurer's closet out and your opponent is basically done. I had this happen to me recently and couldn't make a move for like 5 turns, before finally getting a card to destroy the Closet, and my opponent immediately brought out another closet! Most frustrating game I've ever played. I basically just watched as my opponent slowly whittled away at me.

I play her in my Azorius deck, and it does indeed annoy the crap out of most people I play with. Very powerful with heavy ETB decks. Plays well with Cloudshift & Conjurer's Closet.

My friend now actually hates me :-)! (he used only 2 cards she cant detain, and they are red).

He actually threatened to quit playing magic if i kept using her. (i have used her like 5 more times since and he is still playing... and loosing)

its won quite a few rounds for me!

"Lavinia... you, and the memories we created, are all i have left of my friend now :(" he is still allive just trying franticly to find someone he can beat that does not have this card!)

Thanks to new Legend rule, run her in Bant:
Lavinia into Progenitor Mimic, thanks to new rules, play the Mimic copying Lavinia, saccing the original Lavinia, then whenever the token enters, it will detain, and then sacrifice it, and you get to keep 1 Lavinia for attacking/blocking/looking pretty.

She works very well as a Commander for a soldier tribal deck because, unfortunately, Odric, Master Tactician just doesn't. Mono-white commanders aside from Isamaru, Hound of Konda can't quite seem to cut the mustard in the format.

Lavinia: Mr. Heliod, you are under arrest for the unauthorized destruction of a coastal polis and the demise of the citizens within. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the Azorius court of law.
Heliod: Insolent mortal! Do you not know a god when you gaze upon one?
Lavinia: I do not question the divine nature of your being, but neither do I question the word of law, which extends to all beings, divine or otherwise, and of which you are in direct violation.
Heliod: You cannot hold me to your pitiful human laws! I can smite you with but a gesture.
Lavinia: Be as that may, you're still spending the next round in solitary.
Heliod: My spear would beg to-
Lavinia: Yeah, gonna be confiscating that as evidence.
Heliod: ME-DAMMIT!

Not even Gods are above the law, folks.

Hmm...

Detain decks are certainly annoying to play against,

But I'd rather face one of those than play against a token deck that floods the board with forty-bazillion tokens and you can't hope to block them all.

That being said, the "opponents control" bit is fairly interesting, and not many things have protection from blue, but this is white too.

Anyone know what the ruling would be?

@Vastator: No targets are chosen. Hexproof, Shroud, Protection from white/blue/creatures/everything, Leyline of Sanctity. None help. Torpor Orb will neuter her and any deck using her though.

Wow, what a creature for control. The ETB effect is amazing, even without abuse, it can open up the way for a killing strike, but the 4/4 body and protection from red feel so good too. A very solid, very legendary feeling creature. Pure Azorius.

Story wise, Lavinia was an Azorius arrester on the tail of Jace Beleran. She was blocked by the Azorius Hierarchy, but eventually got on his tail and became the maze runner for Azorius due to the inside knowledge she possessed. She even got Jace to face trial, though he got away with community service. (rich people, amirite?) Fittingly she can detain Jace, Architect of Thought (And less relevant but more useful, Jace, the Mind Sculptor)

I love it when my opponents realize that all their tokens have 0 converted mana cost...
